how to pass the 3 hour test?

Hello,

I found out yesterday I failed the 1 hour glucose test.  My 3 hour test is in 9 days. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do at this point to pass it (drastic changes in diet or anything?) or if I already gestational diabetes, then I already have it and that's that?

Obviously, I want to be healthy for baby regardless, but this will help me understand the test and if I should be doing anything in advance.  I'll ask my doctor, but I don't see he for 4 more days.  Thanks!

  • I don't know if you can physically do anything, but I would not want to if you even could. You would want your results based on how you normally eat. I don't think you can though. Pretty sure if you have it you have it. Fwiw, I don't over-indulge, but have snacks every now and then. I had some cake and ice cream 2 days before the test then fasted the night before like required and passed. So it's not like eating sugar will make you fail the test. The thought crossed my mind that I didn't know if i was setting myself up to fail the test, but I thought that I would want to know if that ice cream put me over the edge and not eat it for the rest of pg if I had GD, if that makes sense.

this I don't really think it is a good idea to try and alter yourself now to try and pass it, the best thing for your baby is to know if you do have it and deal with it that way!!

  • You still have a good chance of passing the 3 hour!  Lots of people fail the one hour and pass the three - I'm one of them!

Honestly i agree with biblionerd. Eat how you normally eat. You need to know if you are diabetic so you can be healthy for the baby, even if it would be an annoyance/ hassle for you.

Plus my understanding is its not that you are diabetic bc you eat too much sugar... It's bc the placenta can interfere with the way your insulin works.

Just follow your doctors instructions!  If it helps, I took a diabetic testing meter with me and after every blood draw, I went back to the waiting room and tested my sugar. Then I at least had an idea of if I passed or not immediately, instead of just waiting for the lab results :-). It helped my peace of mind.

  • My doctor told me if you have it you have it and regardless of eating different for a few days if you had it you would still fail. The drink they give you is very high in sugar so it would be putting a high level in your system and see how you process it. I failed both by a minimum  and control it well with diet.
