Trying to Get Pregnant

I guess stupid people TTC, too

I was chatting about TTC with a colleague today, she's trying for number 2.  She told me that she's felt nauseous recently so she needs to make an appointment with her doctor to take a pregnancy test.  I asked why she didn't just take an HPT.  She told me, "My body doesn't produce enough of the 'stuff' that shows up on HPTs.  With my first, I didn't even find out I was pregnant until I was 4 weeks along!!!!"

The stupidity almost hurts.  To think, this woman has successfully reproduced.

  • This has me chuckling and shaking my head...I've had all too many patients call for pregnancy tests because they thought the ones from the office were better than HPTs.

I recently had a friend from nursing school share with me that when she was working as an EMT, she responded to a rediculous call. Upon responding, the woman promptly told them she needed to be taken to the hospital for a pregnancy test. When questioned why she didn't just call her doctor for one, she proceeded to tell them she her doctor couldn't get her in until Monday and she needed to know NOW!

    Me: 25
Dx PCOS (June 2006, re-confirmed March 2012), Anemia (May 2010-Still fighting to correct it), Fibromyalgia (May 2011)
    Initial b/w - normal
HSG (March 2012) revealed right tube open and looking great. Left tube deformed with hydrosalpinx.
Lap (April 2012) Removal of left fallopian tube. Right tube open and viable, but "rather enlarged." NO evidence of endometriosis...Uterus looks beautiful and "very capable" of carrying a pregnancy!
    October 2012 - Clomid 50mg + trigger + IUI = BFN
With all factors taken into account, RE is recommending IVF. Planning on moving forward with treatment as a single woman using DS by Summer 2013.

  • I'm not even surprised.  Crazy chicks come on here everyday saying they are going in for a blood test because their period is "late."
  • Holy fvvck.

This board is getting quite the ego.

Not everyone who hasn't read TCOYF is an uneducated hillbilly you know.

  • I agree with Karma, in that I am both an educated and intelligent individual who knew absolutely nothing about TTC or what all it involves (other than the obvious) until I had a m/c. While I know it can be frustrating, try to take it easy on everyone...they aren't all fortunate enough to benefit from the knowledgable ladies on this board:)

You shouldn't need a board to have at least an idea how your body works. To me, knowing how you get pregnant is considered an "obvious".

  • Honestly, I don't think the average person knows that pregnancy is dated from their LMP. Sure, it would have been nice if her doctor explained that to her at some point during her pregnancy but I don't think it makes her stupid.

I agree. The amount I knew before I started TTC and what I know now are drastically different.

All of this. Considering that the last sex Ed class I took was 14 years ago as a freshman in high school, I needed a refresher course. This board provided it for me. I'm sure a lot of people don't have the time to find a source like this, so they just depend on their Dr for everything. The only advice my OBGYN gave me was to take a multi-vitamin and have sex EOD. Not the most in depth advice from a professional. She did, however, tell me to call her after I got a BFP on an HPT. Just because people are uninformed doesn't make them stupid.

I totally agree.  Not only was sex ed decades ago for some of us, but I came away from sex ed thinking that any time I had sex w/o protection I was going to get pregnant...  and possibly aids.

I remember joining this board a year ago and it BLEW MY MIND that there was such a small window to get pregnant each cycle and that when you found out you were pregnant you were usually 4 weeks.  I figured the first day of your missed period was 1 day pregnant.

I have a college degree in economics and read everything I can get my hands on.  This kind of info, sadly, isn't common knowledge in today's society and not even "advanced" common knowledge.  It's such specialized information that people only get access to when they really dig for it.

OP, did you at least clue her in a bit?

Especially the bolded. Plus I had abstinence only Sex Ed- so it was all about how sex was a sin and God frowned on that and we'd go to hell for it. Oh and that no matter what, we'd get at least one STD. Seriously, the class was Bible versus on respecting your body and pictures of diseased genitals.
I only knew about condoms from movies, which we all know aren't that accurate.

Agreed.  I haven't read TCOYF (though I plan to!) and only recently found this board. Before I found this board, I still knew how getting pregnant worked and how long it took for a positive to show up on a HPT. It's not rocket science.
