At what week can they start doing them over the belly instead of internally?

usually 8-9 weeks....your 12weeks so theyll most likely do it abdominally

With DS they still did a transvaginal at 11 weeks. But that was 10 years ago so I am sure the technology has changed.

at my last appointment 9w3d they did it on my belly and i saw the baby just fine

I had a normal ultrasound at 6wks3days and saw everything perfectly. I was surprised they weren't doing it transvaginally.....but it was great.

I've never had an internal ultrasound. My OB has done them externally at 8 weeks with both of my pregnancies.

It also depends on your size. At 7w1d they tried abdominally on me, but we were just able to see the sac. Transvaginally was the only way to go. My NT scan is scheduled for the 14th, I'll be 11w6d. With my size I highly doubt an abdominal scan will be clear enough.

My first was 6w6d and perfectly clear! I'm not particularly thin either (not sure if this matters, but I was worried it might).

Edit - meant to mention the above was over the belly.

It depends on the equipment too. And some OB's just do transvag until so many weeks, automatically, so as not to waste time. i.e. they try external, doesn't work, have let you strip down, then come back. easier to start naked.

I went today and she asked me if I was 12 weeks or under, I said yes so she said it's automatically a vaginal US. As it turned out, I'm closer to 13 weeks (instead of the 8 I was expecting) but we got some great pics!
