High-Risk Pregnancy

Question regarding cerclage?

I had a cerlage put in at 20wks with my twin pregnancy because they said that my cervix was short and thin...

Is it true once you have one done you will always need a cerclage? Does it make a difference if this time around if its a single pregnancy? Any info would be great..thanks!

Re: Question regarding cerclage?

  • I'm sorry, IDK if twins make a difference or not.  I was told that I should get one with each of my pregnancies.  Hopefully someone else can give you a better answer.

  • Sadly, my twins were born at exactly 20 weeks due to an undiagnosed incompetent cervix. My MFM told me that I am what they consider a gray case, meaning it is difficult to determine if my IC was a complication of carrying twins or if my cervix is truly incompetent. For this pregnancy, which is a singleton, I was given two options - 1. Be monitored very closely and put in a cerclage at the first signs of my cervix shortening, or 2. Have a preventative cerclage placed at 13 weeks. I opted for option 2. There are obviously risks with a cerclage at any point, however after going through such a devastating loss of my twins, I wanted to take every preventative measure possible. I'm currently just over 20 weeks and my cervix is holding strong so far. I'm very happy I chose to get the cerclage, as it just gives me a little more sense of peace. I plan on getting a preventative cerclage with all my pregnancies. I recommend you talk through your options with you doctor and make the best decision for you. I do have some restrictions due to my cerclage (ie No strenuous activity, no lifting over 10lbs, no standing more than an hour at a time, pelvic rest, etc.) and I see my doc every other week for cervix measurements. Your doc should be able to provide you with a "game plan" so you know all your options and risks.

Am sooo sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine what you went through. Am so glad to hear your pregnancy is holding strong. I didn't realize that there are so many different options... the cerlage might be a good option! thank you so much for the info

  • My dr said I would need one every time, like he was really worried about it.  Told me that if I ever went to another dr to tell them about it and have them ask for his records.  I'd never go to another dr but I don't feel 100% comfortable with the "always" dx...but DD was 8 weeks early even after 2 cercs so I guess I am just that unlucky pt who will probably always need one.  Oh well, it kept her in long enough to be healthy eventually.

  •  I will always need one, but that is unique to my damaged cervix (I'm not traditional IC/CI).  With twins, I would think it's a gray area, and would imagine that you would have the same options as a pp.  For me, I would have requested it even if they said they didn't think it was 100% necessary, because of the what-ifs.  I didn't want to live through it again.  The stitch is keeping the internal os stable and that is what I want (the measurements aren't even really a concern - I've maintained over 3 with no funneling, which we expected).
