Parenting after 35

Friday's Dr. Oz show

I was 38 when I had DS and at 40, I'm still thinking about have baby #2.  I know plenty of ppl here are over 40.  I HATE that 35 is some "magic number".  If we're blessed enough to have a 2nd LO, I'm not sure I want everyone telling me all the warnings again.

What about you?

Anyone going to watch Dr. Oz tomorrow?  I'm curious but I think I'd just end up turning it off at some point.

Take a chance. Take a risk. Take the initiative. Make your wishes a reality and make your dreams come true!

  • I'm curious so if I remember I might watch it. But I agree with you, it's not like you suddenly become infertile at 35, it's a gradual curve and many women have healthy babies after 40.

  • I thought about dvr'ing it, but I just saw the commercial for it & I've changed my mind. It looks like it's going to be one of those alarmist episodes.

I somehow missed the memo informing me that the minute a woman tuns 35, her reproductive organs turn into a pumpkin. I'm assuming this was the true meaning of Cinderella.

This. I may be a whipper snapper at 38, but the vitriol thrown at older moms is getting crazy. It's like we should all have gotten knocked up in high school for the betterment of humanity Angry
  • Im 36 and pregnant with my first. When I went for my first appointment I asked my Midwife if I was high risk becasue I am over the dreaded "35" she said that is the biggest crock of you know what. Becasue I am healthy, I am considered "Normal, Low Risk"

  • So, according to an article on his website (I missed the show), I only had 12% eggs left from my total ovarian reserve when Adrian was conceived and women over 40 only have 3% left. All those moms getting pg naturally after 40 must be either extremely lucky or those numbers are a crock of sh!t. I'm leaning towards the latter ;)

  • I watched it. The lady had the nerve to say that if a woman was pg at 40 or over most likely it was donor eggs! What really? I guess I am the in the minority being 40. The show focused on women who were in 40s and not yet pg. I think the whole show was very grim of ever conceiving after 40. I just don't think this is the case all the time.

  • Oh, I wish I had seen it.  I don't care for Dr. Oz, he kind of creeps me out, but I think I'd have been curious enough to tune in.

I had DD 6 weeks before turning 40.  Got pregnant w/her within 2 months of trying.  DS took a little longer, but still got pregnant naturally when I was 44, and was 45 when he was born.   Sounds like his show implied that was quite a feat??

I saw the show today and I had to hold myself back from throwing something at the TV.  Yes, according to Dr Oz and all of the great information he had to offer made it seem as though you are some sort of medical oddity or miracle.

The show was basically aimed at scaring women in their late 20s and early 30s into getting pregnant immediately because they will be infertile if they wait.  Oh and if they wait too long, their creaky old bodies won't be able to carry the baby to term because they'll have a placental abruption (complete with animation).  It was really awful.  There was a woman who had a bioethics title, but seemed like an internet conspiracy theorist to me, who kept ranting about how fertility treatments are a convenience only for the wealthy and clomid will give you cancer, etc.

It didn't help that Dr Oz and his guests kept throwing numbers and statistics around that seemed very doom and gloom, but without clear context.  Very irritating episode.

BTW, hope it's OK to pop in and post.  I'll intro tomorrow.  I'm almost 36 with an almost 4 month old.

  • i really can't stand his show at all - it's such a "medical joke" show no... which is sad- b/c he used to be a respected doctor (he did my DH's uncle's heart surgery about 9yrs ago... when he was first getting known on oprah).

if he isn't alarmist- then nobody watches or talks about it... so he does crazy alarmist stuff all the time.

i know  MANY women who got pg on their own near/after 40... it's common here in NJ/NYC area.  Sure, some of us need ART... I did, but only b/c I have pcos- not b/c I was 35 when i TTC#2.

    screw him/

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • OK - I wasn't even aware of this particular program....that is until I got an email from my dad last night.  He watched the show and how he learned that getting pregnant after 40 is full of complications because so much can go wrong internally.  So he will keep me in his daily prayers and that my mother is watching over me.  And I should take it easy and rest.  <sigh>

I had to let him know that there was nothing to worry about, I was aware of the risks and they are the same as when I was pregnant with Delaney.  But I was left with a feeling of "gee Dad....thanks for the comforting support...."

  • Ugh, now I'm REALLY glad I missed the show. Sadly, you can't believe anything on TV these days b/c the shows are always exaggerations and drama so that people will tune in. I guess if it was realistic it would be too ho-hum for viewers. Kind of explains all those awful reality shows that are on lately. I don't have time to watch much TV so I'm glad I'm not missing anything! I belong to 2 book clubs and I'm happy to spend more time reading real literature than watching TV crap.

Someone put donor eggs in me when I wasn't looking then...

I'm 43, healthy perfect 6 month old.  Considering another.  My mom was 43 when my last sibling was born.  My aunt was 44 & 46 when my last 2 cousins were born.  My cousin is 42, her baby is 4 months old. My other cousin is 42 and due in the fall.

Apparently the new crime is donor eggs placement in unsuspecting women!

*eye roll*  Give me a break.

  • I didn't watch the show. Didn't know about it. I am was 42 when I delivered my 2nd (11/22/11). My first child is now 21. I am thinking of trying for another one in about a year. I am healthy and try to eat the right foods and exercise. My only concern is that I have had c-section deliveries and it scares me to think of having a third at the age of (to be or will be) 44....
  • I am going to look this show up- b/c now I am curious but I think it will just make me angry.  Why give people anxiety over things that they often can't control?

Girls are born with 1-2 million eggs... so 13% and 4% of that is still a lot of eggs.  and it is not about the number of eggs as much as the quality of eggs.

Exactly, but they failed to mention how many eggs we start off with. They focus instead of the small percentages so every woman over 30 will be depressed after the show. Bad Dr Oz!
