ProActiv

I was wondering if any of you use Proactiv and if so are you continuing to use it during your pregnancy.  I have heard mixed feeling about this from friends and decided to call my dr.  She said that there is no definite research one way or the other and that it was up to me.  So...I was wondering what you all are doing or what you though.  Obviously I know there is no right or wrong just curious as to what others' opinions were.  Thanks!

Re: ProActiv

  • My first OB read the bottle and said it was fine.  Apparently what you want to be concerned about using is salicylic acid, and ProActiv doesn't use that.  The active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, I believe.

I was under the impression that the face wash contained salicylic acid.

I don't see it on the list for the cleanser:

  • I use the cleanser lotion by itself. My OB said it was fine.

  • Like you, I have also heard of mixed messages regarding Proactive.  I have horrible skin.  So, I decided to continue to use it (after all, I did just pay for a new set).  My routine is to use the face wash morning and night.  I use step 2 in the morning only (to avoid drying out my face too much) and I use step 3 morning and night, but I only put it on the spots that are bad (basically my cheeks and chin).  I plan on asking my doctor about it at my first appointment.

  • I have used (and will continue to use) Proactiv.  My doc said it was fine, and the ingredients listed in the product are not in harmful quantity.  Their website also states this, in so many words - but does ask you to consult with your health care provider as well.  I personally only use it once a day... so that's what I would recommend if you're concerned about it; just cut it down to once a day instead of twice/day.

  • I had been using SkinID, which is a similar product.  I discontinued it because my midwife advised against benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

I replaced it with the Tea Tree Oil face wash from The Body Shop and my skin is holding up okay.  Not amazing, but okay.

Did you midwife recommend or OK this? It's what I use and I've found conflicting info via Dr. Google about whether or not it's OK. I stopped using it, but would love to use it again!
