Need some happy ending stories please- acid reflux

Hi, Me and my 9 day old are in NICU- his dr sent us in because of low oxygen saturation levels. They think it might be acid reflux but they aren't completely sure. Have any of you had this diagnosis and now have healthy happy babies? He started Zanex last night.

  • I'm sorry he's in the NICU.  My LO was in the NICU after birth for the same thing along with episodes of sleep apnea.  They never did find a definite cause though.

He does have reflux, but didn't show the symptoms until he was about 3 weeks old.  He takes Zantac twice a day and he's much better.  He no longer arches his back after feeding and does not get congested when lying flat.  He still spits up, but  not nearly as much.  It seems to be working for him but not as good as before. I think the dosage may have to be adjusted since he is a month older and a few pounds heavier now.  He's getting his 2 month shots today so I plan to check with the doctor about it.

  • Our DS never had to be in the NICU thank goodness but he does have bad reflux. For the first 2 months of his life he would just cry and cry and cry. We finally figured out then that he had the reflux and a lactose intolerance. We stared him on soy and Zantac. He does great on the soy but the Zantac stopped working after a bout a month which I hear is common. He is now on Prilosec. He has been on that for a couple days now but I can really tell a difference in him already! Especially sleeping!!! Last night was the first night we all slept a straight 5 hrs! I know it doesnt seem like much but we were lucky to get a straight 3 before the Prilosec!

Hang in there. I think we have turned the corner and I hear from other moms with babies who have reflux things do get easier!!!!

  • My DD was in the NICU because she was early, but does have reflux.  She is on Alimentum since it's the only thing she keeps down and also Prilosec.  Zantac didn't work for us.  She still spits up a ton but is not in pain, which is the important thing.

It may take a little bit to figure out the right food/med combo but things will get easier.  Violet is a whole different child on Prilosec.  Hang in there mama and I hope your little one feels better soon!
