Toddlers and Chiropractors

Have you taken your child in, and for what?'

I just got done with an article that was talking about digestive disorders, and Immunotherapy and how adding chiropractic care would be beneficial.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Toddlers and Chiropractors

  • No and certainly not a regular one.  I will state up front I'm not fond of most general chiros and their methods as my body does not react well to that.  I have seen and prefer non-force alignment technique (NFAT) chiros, where they use a series of small movements to put the joints back in place.  Even preferred for me, where I think it is the muscles pulling my joints out of place, is physical therapy to put me back into place with isometric work and then work on retraining the muscles to keep me in place.  I am just nervous because there are studies about over-zealous chiros and PTs who can do major damage, including tearing of major blood vessels in the neck.  My PT has seen patients for injuries from both chiros and PTs.  For a toddler, I might look to child-friendly yoga instead as that can help keep things moving and circulating in a beneficial way.

  • I have been going to one ever since I hurt my back a few years back and its been tremendous help for me to function on a day to day basis.  Even got the skeptical hubby to go now..

My son has DiGeorge so he does have a immune deficiency, possibly asthma, and had open heart surgery at 3 weeks old. So I was told he would be sick a lot and been hospitalized a lot.

He has been seeing a chiroprator since he was 6 weeks old and never been hospitalized for being sick.  Actually never had more than a little cold that would last a week and has only had 4 ear infections in his almost 3years.

I will say the doctors are shocked since he doesn't have a thymus at all!  I contribute that to his weekly chiropractic appts.

  • My husband goes for his back pain, it's the only thing that helps him- he tried everything from accupuncture, to hiring a personal trainer, to weekly massages- for him it's been great.

However I would really think twice about taking my toddler, maybe if they were a chiro who specalized in kids I would at least meet with them and see if they could help, but not just a regular chiro.

  • I found a fantastic chiropractor about a year ago (for myself) and have taken DS in a few times when he had fallen and I noticed he started stumbling around.  The chiropractor I go to uses an activator to adjust the spine - no manual manipulation or "cracking" so it's more gentle.  I noticed a difference right away - his balance was off and the adjustment fixed it.  I've also heard fantastic things about digestive issues and reflux being helped by chiropractic.

  • My chiro is the head of his dept at our medical college.  He believes in care for muscular-skeletal issues and nothing else.  My pedi agrees and happens to see the same doc as me.

  • I come from a family of chiroprators so of course my answer is yes, definitely you should at least give it a try....but go to someone who has experience with kids
  • I've heard that there are chriopractors around that also do something to eliminate ear infections in children.  I was talking with my dad about this, and we agreed that it seems some chiropractors are branching out of the area they went to school for.  I am not comfortable with a foot doctor delivering my baby, so I wouldn't be comfortable with a chriopractor treating my child for something other than chiropracty (is that a word).  BUT, this is only my opinion after a LOT of debate and rethinking in our house.  Good luck in your decision!

  • I'm a massage therapist that works at a chiro office. I had adjustments during my pregnancy and they were great!

We love our chiro (my boss), When Ds takes a tumble I'll bring him in for an adjustment and there isn't any cracking or popping. He is just massaged and stretched. The Dr has been doing this for the past 25 years. He stays up to date on techniques and contributes to medical journals.  Find someone you trust that works with kids.

  • We all go regularly.  About every 4-6 weeks.  My LOs have been going since they were a few days old.

  • i have been seeing my chiro for 10 years, she has been in practice for 35 years and she has done wonders for me.  i used to get migraines, i have slight scoliosis and i am susceptible to stiff necks--she has made them all go away.  DD has been going since she was around 3 months old--my chiro uses an activator on her and doesn't touch her neck.  DS hasn't gone yet but he will.  do your research, there are huge benefits from going to a chiropractor.

  • I took DS in a few times after one morning he woke up with his head turned all the way to one side and was screaming and wouldn't move his head... (after I got over my panic that it was meningitis or some horrible serious thing, I put the tv on and turned him and sure enough, the head started moving toward midline...hmmmm) Our NP suggested the chiro if we were open to it & we went to a super child friendly practice (the waiting area was ridiculous, they had more thomas trains than DS could even believe LOL). Both the chiros had some kind of pediatric training & were so good w/ him- they did adjustments while having him 'jump' and were very child friendly. We went three times & after the third, he was moving his head back to both sides easily & not complaining of neck pain when I would touch the tender area. Of course they said I should find a new one when we moved (shortly after that) but I did not, although I would if he continued to have problems. He had plagiocephaly as a baby & wore a helmet and after that was all done, I heard a lot of ppl had success w/ chiros to help with that so I kind of wish we had taken him for that when he was a baby. ETA (sorry for lack of paragraphs, i'm on an ipad)--- I think for non-musculoskeletal stuff I would be willing to try chiro if more first line medical approaches weren't working for us. I don't think it would hurt if you felt they were gentle & appropriate.
