Swing/slide set questions

We have a really small backyard but I'd still like to get a swing/slide set for DS as he gets older.  I'm thinking something with a medium-sized slide (so he could still use it when he's 5+) and two swings.  I don't think we have room for much more.

What kind of material would you recommend?  There are a lot of wood options, but are they going to last without getting splintery and looking really weathered? Do the plastic ones get really hot in the sun?

Does anyone have a particular set they love or don't like?

TIA!

Re: Swing/slide set questions

  • I debated on whether I should buy a really nice wooden swing set now or whether I should get a small swing set for when the kids are little and then buy a nicer swing set for when they are older. Also, DH didn't think we even needed a swing set so I had to convince him that it's something we should do.

So, I set up a Google Alert on Craigslist to send me emails when people posted swing sets in the area. I ended up getting this Step 2 swing set for only $75 from someone who lived less than 2 miles away (score!)

I have been very happy with this swing set. First of all, because it's plastic, it feels pretty safe. There isn't anything to pinch their fingers and it's not like they can get splinters from it. DD#1 loves to use the swings, the slide, and the little house. I think it's a great starter swing set for when the kids are young. If they continue to play on this, then when they get older, we will evaluate getting a nicer swing set that is more geared towards older children.

I already had one of these Little Tikes swings for the baby. So, we were easily able to un-hook one of the regular swings and put the baby swing on instead.

So, I have been really happy with the purchase. If you ever want to come by after DC pick-up to see it, let me know. We don't even have to be home, you can just go into the backyard and take a look.

  • Thanks!  I actually saw that one online and it seemed like a perfect size but I never thought about looking on Craigslist - great idea - it retails for a couple hundred, at least!  I also saw that there is a pool you can attach to the slide in the summer - they're obviously too small now, but it looked fun!

DH is wanting something bigger that DS can play on for a long time, but I think it is going to be impossible to fit, and we're walking distance from a park. We could put a big one in our front yard but I'm pretty sure we agree that would look really odd.

    Two questions:

Does the plastic get hot?  I'm can't remember how shady our new yard is in summer :)

When do you think your girls will outgrow it?

I never really noticed the plastic getting too hot but we got it at the end of summer so we didn't use it a ton in the hot weather.

I don't know about the outgrowing question. I'm thinking probably around age 5 or 6?

  • Thanks!  5 or 6 seems reasonable to me, especially for $75!  you got a great deal.

Funny that we are trying to convince the DH's of opposite things with the same swing set Stick out tongue
