Swaddle question - HELP!!!

I am a first time mom.  My son, Cole is 9 weeks old.  We've been swaddling him but now he is breaking through the swaddle and struggling to get free the whole time he's in it.  He wants to have his arms free but since he can't control them, they wake him up so it's an endless cycle.  It's really starting to affect his sleeping.  I've tried putting him in the crib w/o the swaddle altogether but his arms and hands still wake him up.  I just bought the Miracle blanket that has slot for arms so we'll see.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Should I just tough it out and see if he gets used to his hands and arms?

Any insight would be much appreciated :)

Re: Swaddle question - HELP!!!

  • My cousin gave us a number of different swaddle blankets when Emma was born.  She's now 10.5 weeks and we still swaddle her at night.  We found that the woombie (sold through Amazon) works the best. They sell several different sizes/colors.  (It looks a bit like a cocoon...it zips up, so no wrapping involved)!   We use it every night...if not she wakes herself up. HTH!

  • Look up the escape prod swaddle on YouTube. It has been a life changer when it comes to sleep. DD was always trying to escape from her swaddle and waking herself up with her hands and arms, but this swaddle has really helped out!

  • Thanks for the post! Im having the same problem
  • We learned how to swaddle from the video "Happiest Baby on the Block."  He started breaking free awhile ago now we leave one arm out.  It took him a few nights but he sleeps pretty well with one out.  That way, he can be curious and try to suck that hand (he sleeps with mitts), but it's only half the chance of whacking himself in the face.  He falls asleep with his hand up by his face sometimes so I will sloooooowly bring his hand back down by his side.  That little hand gets cold enough as it is being unswaddled.

He usually breaks fully free throughout the night, where I just reswaddle him in his cradle and he usually goes right back to sleep

  • Carter did that too for a while, so we thought he didn't like, we just figured out (as PP mentioned from happiest baby on the block) that we weren't swaddling tight enough, so we bought bigger swaddlers and wrapped him up tighter and he does still fight it at first until he falls asleep. then he's lights out for a good 5 hours!
