Apparently tummy time = nap time

DS used to rock at tummy time.  He would lift his head up and turn it side-to-side etc.  But these last couple weeks he just lays there completely still like he's resting from his hard day of peeing, pooping, and napping.  lol  I'm not worried about his neck strength because he lifts his head constantly when he's up on my shoulder and can hold it pretty steady.  Should I be worried about him building up his arm strength at this point?  He's about 8.5 weeks.  I've tried playing musical toys up past his head and placing toys just out of his reach to try to get a reaction...but he just lays there like a limp noodle until eventually he starts crying.

When he lays on his back he is VERY active. Reaching for toys, following things with his eyes, smiling and cooing.

Am I being overly paranoid?

  • I really have no idea what is normal or not.  I know DS also just lays there during tummy time and won't lift his head or body.  He really hasn't even tried to grab for toys yet, and he is already 15 weeks old.

  • Mine lifts the wrong end during tummy time. She gets her legs under herself and pushes her butt up in the air. She holds her head up just fine in a sitting position and has started trying to pull herself up into a sitting position, so I'm not worried too much yet. BTW, she's 10 weeks.

  • i think its pretty normal behaviour, my LO is the same way... he went through a spirt a few weeks ago lifting his head like crazy during tummie time but now just lays there.  He also has a strong nexk for his ge when he's up on my shoulder.  My MIL suggested also doing tummie time by me laying on the floor on my back and having LO on lying  belly down on my belly  (supported obviously).  this gives him so more neck strength opportunity.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. We are in the same boat. He's just not interested in trying much anymore, and always ends up crying after a few minutes.

  • What your LO is doing is normal!  No worries!  My son's OT suggested laying him on a Boppy to give him a different perspective and so that he can more easily see the toys in front of him.  I lay his chest on the top and his arms in front of him.  That way he'll at least see the toys.  He still won't reach for them though.

  • I wouldn't worry about it at all.  DD2 just falls asleep on her belly.  She's got great head control.

DD1 did the same thing and she's just fine too - walks and talks and everything.  ;)

  • My LO is the same.  I let him nap on his tummy in the afternoon (very well supervised) to give the back of his head a break and when he gets restless while napping I count it as 'tummy time' since he uses different muscles than when he does the same thing on his back.
