Re: Who's getting/not getting NT scans done? ***NSFW***
Im having the same problem... I cant decide. Ive had two miscarriages and my doctor told me sometimes if you the NT scan (and the results are positive for problems and an amniocentis is needed) they have to collect it (either through your) cervix (or through your belly with a needle) and there is a chance, slight though it may be of having a miscarriage. I honestly want to know if something is wrong with my baby, i just cant decide. I know my insurance covers it i just cant decide. Good luck hun, i hope more people who have had it done will post and we can get some feedback. This is my first baby (besides the miscarriages) and i cant decide. GL hope you get some answers! Take care.
I don't think I'm sure what you mean. Do you mean a transvaginal ultrasound? I've never heard of any risk associated with those, at all. The transducer is certainly not going through your cervical opening.
I'm going to get the NT scan and bloodwork done, but that's as far as I'll go. I won't be getting a CVS or amnio due to the danger and the fact that any information gathered from it will not affect the fact that I will continue the pregnancy.
I need to call and schedule mine tomorrow. I'm hoping to get in at 11w5d, I guess for selfish reasons. That morning will ensure DH can make it, and the following weekend we plan on making a trip to announce to family, so a nice new picture would be lovely.

Say what? A NT scan is a blood test + an ultrasound to look at the nuchal fold (basically back of the neck). Blood is taken from your arm and nothing else is "collected".
I have mine tomorrow. We are doing the NT and blood work but that's it. It won't change anything but we just want to be prepared. And after 3 m/c's I just want to see baby again :-)
Good luck in your decisions!!
I'm having it done in a few weeks. We're scheduled to return the next week to review the scans and results of the blood work. Our insurance covers it, so this is not an issue.
For us personally, the results wouldn't change our decision to continue the pregnancy, but I would like to be prepared if there are any medical challenges to be expected and be well informed.
GL to you..
We are scheduled to have it done on 2/2. I pushed the date back a few days to make sure I can confirm coverage with our insurance. I am hoping the claims from earlier appts/labs/ultrasounds this month will be filed by then so more of our deductible can be met beforehand.
EDIT: tamberlee... if you're undecided, maybe try listing out your reasons for wanting it and not wanting it done. And what would you do with the results?
FWIW... I fall into the category of "knowledge is power" and we'd like to know ahead of time if health issues exist with this baby. That way we could better prepare for what lies ahead in terms of resources needed, etc.

We just had it done yesterday and I'm glad. I didn't know that up until this point I was holding my breath. But seeing that little peanut again and getting good results (at least from the scan so far) really made me breathe a sigh of relief.
I'll be 40 in a few days and I was/am very concerned about abnormalities due to my "advanced maternal age". (I hate that phrase, by the way!). I want to know what we're up against if there is anything wrong. And in this day, there are options for in-utero surgeries should that be necessary so I want to have all the information possible to help us have the healthiest baby.
It's not invasive and very safe. So if you're insurance covers it, I say go for it.

I will be getting mine on Valentines day (awwwwe). I can't wait. Anything to ease my mind.
Sidsue, I think you are mistaken. The NT/Sequential scan does not involve collecting anything from your cervix. You may want to read up on it or call your doctor for clarification. As other PP's have stated this is an U/S & Blood work (from your arm, as per usual)

We did not have the NT scan for DS because we knew it would not change anything for us moving forward. Now, however, I have read and discussed it with my doctor and have decided, like some PPs above, that knowledge is power. Basically, it is more information and a good reference point for the big anatomy scan at around 20 weeks. If something were to show on that scan, they can compare it to the 12 week scan and determine whether it is something concerning. That is a big relief to me.
I agree that the possibility of stress is there, but I think it is worth it.

We deceide not to do the 1st trimester screening/NT scan.
I have heard horror stories about women who have been told their baby probably has a problem only to find out later that the baby is perfectly fine.
I knew I would not terminate the pregnancy or risk miscarriage with a CVS or Amnio so I decided to save my self the stress of a possibly false "positive" and just skip the screening.
My Doctor never offered the NT scan to me.... maybe it's not done here in Canada? Anyway I am doing the bloodwork and have already gone in for my first sample.
I agree with knowledge is power and I do have a history of mental disabilities in my family so I do want to be prepared.
I think you have confused the 1st trimester screening/NT scan with the CVS test. The 1st trimester screening is a blood test from your arm and an ultrasound. The CVS test is where the doctor takes cells from tiny fingerlike projections on the placenta called the chorionic villi and sends them to a lab for genetic analysis. This is can be done through cervix or abdomen.
I'm not having it done, we would continue this pregnancy regardless of the results, plus I have heard too many stories of the tests being wrong. I have a friend who was over 35 with her daughter so she was required to do all the testing including the amnio, results showed her baby had downs, they did lots of research to be prepared, even met with Dr. Newman, because apparently breastfeeding a downs baby is near impossible, baby came, no downs!
I wouldn't mind the extra ultrasound though, especially because at my last appointment (11w, 1d) the resident couldn't find the heartbeat. I'm not overly concerned, I just want to hear it!

My insurance covers it so mine is scheduled for Fed. 2nd. DH and I said that if insurance covers it we will do it, if they don't we wont. It wont change anything for us, but would also be nice to know if there is anything we need to prepare for.
My Ovulation Chart || Ovulation Chart
This. Our insurance covers it, so I figure why not.
I had it done with DD and they discovered she had a choroid plexus cyst on both sides of her brain. After crying in the office & Googling WAY too much, we discovered that these are often very common & go away by week 26 (I think?). By 25 weeks DD was clear
But had she not been, at least we would've been ready & educated on what to expect.

We decided to pass too. I would just stress about the test and not be able to get anything done. It's much easier on me to assume the baby is fine and just wait for the 20 week ultrasound which will reveal any major problems we'd need to look out for anyway.
Oh my gosh! Im an idiot! Darn you pregnancy brain... I meant amniocentisis, not the NT scan... ugh im sorry. I just sound like a blithering idiot. You will have to excuse me ladies. Im sorry for the confusion. lol i had a hell of a day yesterday and everything the doctor and i talked about kind of ran together... I was talking about Amniocentisis, not the NT. Again sorry for being an idiot. Now im going to have to hang my head in shame!

Mine is Monday. I cannot wait!
I didn't get it done with my last two, but this time around I'm getting it done because I want an early peek at the baby.
The results won't change anything. But it would be good to know if there was a problem early, just so we could emotionally prepare ourselves.
