Cloth Diapering

Training pants and storing CD's for next LO?

I've been CD'ing my DS for about 7 months. Lately, it's nearly impossible to get a diaper on him, cloth or disposable. He literally fights me with all his strength, and usually I end up holding his ankles in one hand while he's pushing himself upward, balancing on his head & shoulder. I'm literally ready to give up on our cloth and try Huggies Slip On's.

So, my first question: Are there cloth diapers made like Pull-Ups? If so, are they made in smaller sizes? I've seen cloth training pants, but I've only found them in sizes 2T and up. My DS is still small for his size, and is still in 9mo clothes.

My second question: If we do decide to put away the CD's in favor of Huggies Slip On's, what is the best way to prep CD's for storage, and then what is the best way to store them?

  • You can get trainers, but they do generally run in larger sizes as you said.  You could also look at side snapping cloth diapers and see if those work (at 1, I'm presuming he's still doing some wicked poops in his diaper and isn't close to PTing).

As for diaper changes, my eldest was a total pistol and I basically had to use both of my legs to hold his arms down, sometimes with a leg across his chest to get him changed.  I'm not positive having a pull on diaper would have helped in any way, though you could also try pre-fastening them to see if that helps.

  • I'm not at the storing stage, but I did go through a fighting stage too.  It is just a phase.  DS would twist out of the diaper and since I use mostly PFs and covers that was a major pain.  But after a month or 2, he calmed down and let me diaper again.

  • Try using a side snapping diaper.  Snap them first, then pull them up onto your LO's bum.  You'll want side snaps with stretchy sides.

We like the swaddlebees simplex AIO 2.0 diapers for this, we use the sized version with good success.

  • See if you can find a WAHM who will customize a smaller trainer for you.

  • I agree that the fighting is likely a phase. You might try the Slip-ons for a few weeks and then come back to cloth (diapers), to see if it's any better.

If you do want to look into cloth training pants, I'm making some for my son using the Trimsies trainer pattern. He's in 18-month or 24-month size in pants and the smalls fit him well. The pattern comes with an extra small size, so I bet that would work for your son. You can see a list of Trimsies licensees here: https://trimsies.com/licensees.shtml

If they don't have any XS's in stock, you can probably contact them about sewing some for you.

  • Oh, these stores might help, too:

Parents who practice EC (elimination communication) usually start in the first few months, so training pants designed for EC'd babies come in very small sizes. They may not have diaper-like absorbency, though, since that kinda defeats the purpose of EC'ing Wink

Also, on your storage question, I don't do anything special. Obviously, I make sure to wash the diapers Smile But then I just put them in a closet. You probably want to choose somewhere where temperatures don't fluctuate too drastically, but other than that... yeah, wash and store.
