Seeing stars

A few times in the past few months, and then twice this week, I've had episodes of "seeing stars".  I stood up too fast or bent at the waist to pick something up and then stood back up, which resulted in flashy lights in my peripheral vision.

I mentioned it to my midwife last time and she wasn't too concerned.  I have another appointment in two weeks, and I'll ask about it again at that time.  I'm just debating if I should call, since it has happened twice this week.

Does anyone else experience this or have any advice?

Re: Seeing stars

  • Happens to me pretty often too, my OB wasn't concerned either. It's been awhile since I've talked to him about it, but I think he said something about sitting or standing a certain way that was cutting off circulation, and to try moving to get everything flowing the way it should again.

  • How's your blood pressure? I had issues with pre-e with my last pregnancy and this is one sign of pre-e, plus high blood pressure and swelling, protein in urine.

So far all of my blood pressure checks have been normal.  But my midwife did say that it was probably happening because of a change in blood pressure when I stood up.

  • This happened to me all the time before I was pregnant- I have really low blood pressure. Just remember to get up slowly and you should be fine. Check with your doctor if it is happening frequently

  • I see stars often. I have low blood pressure and the dr. thinks it has to do with that more than anything else. I am getting an echocardiogram since my heart murmur has increased in volume, which is normal. My dr. said she isn't worried and that it is probably just something I get with pregnancy (I had the same problems with dd). Hopefully your doctor can give you some reassurance!

  • I agree with PP's, I'd blame low blood pressure.  This happens to me often, and when they check my BP at the doctor its rarely over 100/60.  Not low enough for them to be concerned, but I've never mentioned the seeing stars or the "blackouts" (not sure how else to describe them).
