D.C. Area Babies

I made it 10 months...

Well, for the first time since DD was about 2 weeks old, I didn't nurse her this morning. It was a bit emotional for me and I know it'll be even harder to go home and not nurse her after work tonight, but I don't have any regrets. We were only nursing twice a day for about a month and last week i dropped the evening session and today was the first time I dropped the morning session so I guess we're officially weaned. I'm a little engorged today, but it's not painful. I just was getting so frustrated with her not getting enough from me during those sessions and supplementing each feeding with a bottle that I just decided it was enough and 10 months was good. She loves solids and has no problems with formula so I feel this is the best thing. Given all the problems I had early on with an extremely painful latch, being hospitalized for my kidney infection when DD was 2 weeks old, and then supply issues when I went back to work, I'm proud we made it this far. I thought DH would be upset that I stopped before a year, but he's been really supportive and has told me several times today how proud of me he is, so that's been helping. Thanks for all your support here too!

  • I remember when you went to the hospital and your early problems, and I was amazed and impressed that you were able to keep bf-ing after that--it took a lot of determination! And then to keep it going for 10 months. Wow! Way to go, mama!

You should be really proud. It's one thing to breastfeed for several months if you have an easy time, but it's a huge accomplishment to do it when there are challenges (like being hospitalized...omg!).

  • That is a wonderful achievement, congrats.  I found that because I had lots of latch and supply issues, I really fought to BF as long as I could, maybe because I was having such trouble and I wanted to show myself I could do it.  So it was doubly rewarding.  And enjoy your new liberty and having your body to yourself again.
  • Way to go! I had to stop before I was ready too at 6 months because of supply issues, and I know how hard it can be. But, for me too the frustrations were just causing me so much stress. You did a fabulous job! I too thought my DH was going to be upset but like yours he was so supportive. Sometimes they surprise us! Wink

  • Congrats on such a great accomplishment.  Hopefully the "emotionality" (and engorgement) are gone soon.  If you plan on having more kids, look forward to having that bond again.  As PP said, enjoy having your body back, not being tied to any feeding/pumping schedule whatsoever, and being able to wear any clothes you want without having to worry about "access"  Smile

  • Congratulations!  I should of answered this for the QOTD, but one thing I've discovered with parenting is that my sanity is as or more important than activities for my child. You've done a great job.
  • You're my hero! I'm struggling here at just five months and each and every breastfeeding session is a dance in convincing DD that she wants to nurse and that a bottle is NOT preferable to me. There are some times I just want to give up but people like you and others on this board give me the faith to get through today... and tomorrow... and the next day.

Congratulations - you've done a great thing for your LO and you should be damned proud of yourself!

  • Wow!  10 months is amazing -- way to go!!  That is a really long time and you should be proud!  BTW, our DDs are almost the same age.  I made it to 9 months with BFing and I'm darn proud of that :-)
