*I posted this on the third tri board as well.*
I'm sure you've looked into the cost of quality breast pumps as I did. They can be really pricey. It was a source of anxiety for me because I didn't want to spend that much, if there was a possibility I would be unable to breast feed.
Well, we went to baby's R us this weekend and were talking to the people at the registry desk about the registry completion coupon because I wanted to use it for my breast pump. She told me to talk to my insurance company before I purchased one to see if any of the cost would be covered. She said not to ask if the one I wanted was covered, but to ask which pumps would be covered. I did just that a few minutes ago and found out that the medela instyle double electric pump would be covered 100% with a script from my doctor because I planned to go back to work (school was also an option). Call to talk to your insurance company to ask about it. The worst they'll say is no.
The woman at baby's r us also told me that there is a new IRS tax law that allows you to claim a breast pump on your taxes. It's something to consider if you itemize your returns.
Just a few helpful tips. I hope someone else can benefit too!
Re: Ladies who plan to breast feed and/or pump
Exactly! I thought maybe they'd cover 50% or less. It was certainly a pleasant surprise. I'm pretty stoked too! A bit of stress off my shoulders.
I *THINK* that new policies are required to cover breast pumps.
FSA funds can be used to cover pumps and breastfeeding supplies.
If you qualify for a health deduction (like 7.5% of your income) you can claim your pump and supplies as a tax deduction.
I also suggest checking out www.awaybabyessentails.com It is run by lactation consultants or nurses, I can't remember, who want to encourage breastfeeding. They sell their pumps at like cost. I paid $278 for my medela freestyle when BRU wanted $389. NO shipping fees, no tax, 24 hour assistance.
Oh that's awesome. When I had my son end of 2010 my company pays 90
% of the cost so I just had to pay the rest. Now Im told my insurance helps too but I still have my pump from last time.
When I had called my insurance in the past they didn't cover it. That's awesome that yours does! Madela is great! and let me tell you if you email them with any questions they have a pretty quick response!
It's a GIRL!
Thanks for the tip about asking them questions.
you are correct on the laws, FSA can be used for anything breastfeeding related (nursing pads, lansinoh, pump, parts, etc).
I also used that website and that's how I got my freestyle for so much cheaper too!
Yes, I have to have a script from my doctor, and order through the hospitals medical equipment supplier. But I don't have a copay or out of pocket expense for those things.
