How to deal with LO getting out of bed?

The boys rm is upstairs and ours is down.  We put them up around 830 or so and at about 834 if we're lucky all we hear is little feet pitter pattering away.  On a good night we only have to go back up there 2-3 times before they fall asleep - on a bad night (like last night) it can go on for an hour.  DH is amazing and I haven't even gone upstairs much in the last week or so to do bedtime, but he's at the end of his rope.  He's tried staying calm, getting angry (not my favorite approach) and we just don't know how to get them to stay in bed once we put them in bed.

Any suggestions?

Re: How to deal with LO getting out of bed?

  • No, I have no real advice but I was going to post something similar.  It can be hit or miss for us, some nights he gets up several times and some nights not at all.  I have no advice other than to just keep putting them back in there.  It seems like I've heard the less attention/stimulation you give them the better (no talking, hugs, etc) just place them back in bed.

He's gotten up 3 or 4 times already tonight, this last time he said "I just already missed you".  The last time he got up was about 20 mins ago, I'm hoping it was the last time.

  • And this is why I'm dragging my feet on putting Nicholas in a bed.   I know it's time (my baby is growing up and he is getting a little big for the crib), but I just can't bring myself to do it.   I almost wish he'd climb out of the crib, so then I'd have to do the switch.

  • What works for us right now (which I realize may not be an option for others for a couple of reasons) is to tell her she is going to need to sleep in her crib if she keeps acting like a baby (she got out of her crib at 21the months but hurt herself so she has never tried since, I am positive she could get out if she would try). Most nights of the week we end up putting her in the crib at least once for 10the minutes or so. After that she is usually good about staying in bed.....though she will sometimes get up to turn on the light or grab a toy but as long she is back in bed within a minute or two we don't worry about it. Eventually she wears herself out and falls asleep. Another thing.....my neighbor just bought a Motorola monitor that has a speaker so when their two year old gets out of bed her dh just speaks into it "Liam, get back in bed", could be worth a try. Good luck!
