Anyone using ice packs for sore nipples?

I am so sore that my nipples wake me up during the night from pain.  This can't be normal.  But all I could dream about last night was putting ice packs in my bra today to soothe them.

Has anyone had to ice?  What did you do to improve the discomfort?

I read that if your nipples are still sore past the 1st week PP then something is wrong - but I find that hard to believe.  I'll admit he may not have the best latch, but usually it just hurts the first 30 seconds, then as he nurses it doesn't hurt at all.

The pain is more intense during the rest of the day - I have tried using breast milk on the nipple after nursing, Lansinoh, and a combination of them both.  I also wear disposable breast pads and change them often.  (I've ordered nipple butter from earth mama angel baby, but it hasn't arrived yet.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

Re: Anyone using ice packs for sore nipples?

  • I got some of those gel pads and would keep them in the fridge while I nursed.  After every feed I would put on a bunch of lanolin and then the chilled gel pads.  It gets better I promise!

  • My LC actually suggested to apply dry heat after nursing, for about 5-10 minutes. I also started using triple nipple cream (you need a prescription from your OB, but I just googled the recipe and mixed it myself) a couple of days ago and my nipples look and feel much better already. They were cracked and bleeding before, not they look healed and don't burn and hurt as much anymore.

We just started bf'ing without the nipple shield a week ago, so I am just now going through this whole stage as well.

I hope it gets better for you soon!

  • When I had DS, my LC suggested putting some nipple cream on a couple breast pads and keeping them in the freezer.  Then, after nursing, I could just pull one out (or two) and put them in my bra.  Worked great and I didn't have to go spend money on the gel pads.

  • Nipple Butter made a huge difference for me. Ice packs should help too, I use Soothies that have been kept in the refrigerator.

I was told by friends & LC's it would take about 2 weeks for the pain to completely subside.
