Hospital bag or suitcase?

I'm in the process of getting my hospital stuff together and I'm starting to feel like I need a suitcase!

Are you keeping it small and taking like an overnight bag or are you packing up a suitcase?

Re: Hospital bag or suitcase?

  • Keeping it small, but it seems like a pretty personal decision.  I used the hospital gowns (and was perfectly comfortable), so didn't need much as far as clothes.

  • We went out & bought a duffle bag. I think it's about 32" & it rolls! haha. I thought it looked kind of big, but when you factor in any extra pillows you may want, I think it'll be the perfect size :]

  • We just had our labor class today.  They recommended packing 2 bags.  One bag would have stuff just to help you during labor - so the only clothing item on that list was socks.  The 2nd bag should have stuff you will want after delivery and should be left in the car until that time - pj's, toiletries, going home outfits for mom and baby, etc.

  • I'm using a medium sized rolling suitcase. We are just using the one instead of bringing a couple for different things. At least, at this point that is what we are doing. Hospital is only 15 minutes from home so it is mostly important that we have the stuff we want with us for during labor.

Same here. Our house is so close to the hospital that our parents can grab whatever we could possibly need after, but I still intend to bring some things that I know I will want for after.

  • I will probably take my rolling carry-on sized suitcase because I find it to be more convenient for finding things than my typical overnight bag.

  • Umm, it depends. At this point we're taking DS1 with us to the hospital (him and H will be in the delivery room with me), so I need to bring stuff just for him- food, snacks, sippy/straws for cups, diapers, wipes, etc. It'll probably end up being 2 [duffle-sized] bags- one for Lucian and one for me/H.

  • I'm bringing a duffel bag for our toiletries and clothes, and a diaper bag for LO's things and other random little things we'll need.

  • Overnight bag, not sure I need that much....

I will add: I'm using this not a duffel or a couple of totes because it will be easier to find things. Anything DH may want (slippers, snacks, etc.) will be in there as well as a small toiletry bag for me, going home clothes, etc. and the laptop (bringing this instead of an ipod). It isn't a huge suitcase at all.

  • I spend a few hours chilling in L&D triage every week and see lots of couples walking by to get admitted.  I see the new mom and dad sharing a rolling suitcase most often.

  • I will either do a duffel bag or the small carry on rolling suitcase.  Last time I packed so much stuff for both DH & myself and won't be doing that again.  So we will be packing just the basics.

  • I'm taking my REI Venus backpacking backpack.  But it will have everything for me, hubs, and baby.  That thing goes everywhere with me.  It even fit everything I needed for 3 weeks in Germany.

Dear gravity, I think maybe I am a bit of a hippie.  Surprise

  • wow....i think i will TRY to pack a small bag. HOWEVER going to pack another one for my DD (10) and goodies for her and hubby.....when i think about it...i am going to pack like 4 bags!  DH can pack his own bag. wow...that is a lot to process. But items in bag will be kept SIMPLE

    1. My bag

    2. DD bag

    3. Snack and food Bag

    4. Baby bag

  • I'm taking a suitcase. I'm a notorious overpacker so I wouldn't be surprised if I also end up with a tote, if I don't put stuff in it, I'll fold it and pack it to haul away any of the extra goodies we bring home. For us, the hospital is an hour away from home and DH is planning to either stay with a family member or get a hotel room close to the hospital if I'm induced, so it's not like he can just run home if we forget something. If I end up with a planned C-section, we won't have to worry so much about him staying close and we won't be there for that extra day or two before delivery.

    Me (33). DH (37). DD (2.2012). MCs x4. After 4 years & 7 months, due 4.2018!

This :o)  And since I was hospitalized a couple of weeks ago I know how comfy the gowns are and what they provide there.  So I won't really have to pack much.

this sounds like a fantastic idea. i think i'll be more concerned about having everything for the baby rather than myself!

This is a REALLY great idea!!  I am definitely going to do this now that you mentioned it.  I felt like an idiot when I had SOO much stuff to take into my delivery room.  A smaller bag just for L&D is a great idea!

  • I'm going to gather all of the items DH, LO and I will need and then see what will work best. I'm hoping to use a bag and not full on suitcase, though.

I'm an overpacker by nature so hopefully DH will keep that in check :)
