First, I would recommend reading Baby Bargains. That book is a wealth of information on car seats, cribs, clothes, and just about everything else you could ever need for a baby. It reviews all the major brands and breaks everything down for you. I absolutely love it!
As far as car seats go, I narrowed it down between the Chicco Keyfit 30 and the Graco Snugride 30. I then went to Babies R Us yesterday and played around with them. I am also planning to get a snap and go stroller so I looked at the options for the two seats also. I decided to go with the Snugride. I also did some research online to see how the seats seem to fit in our cars. I didn't want to fall in love with a seat only to find that it would be impossible to install in our cars.

Ditto Baby Bargains! You can also borrow seats from BRU to install in your car to see how easy/hard it will be. I wouldn't plan on spending an afternoon trying several seats though... maybe just one or two since an employee has to be with you while you do it.
There are several car seat safety experts out there that can help you find something that will suit your needs. For us, the higher weight limits weren't necessary. We make small babies that don't hit that 30 lb limit until they're WAY beyond the height limit. My son is 28 months and he's still no where close to the 30 lbs... but he's 34", tiny little guy!

I know the fire dept. will correctly install baby car seats for you. Maybe you could contact your local fire dept. & ask if they have a list of recommended car seats for infants.
Definitely pick up the newest edition of Baby Bargains like PPs suggested. For infant car seats I would stick with Britax, Graco, or Chicco. We love our Chicco Keyfit 30, but the others are good too. The best one fits your car well and gives you a good install. This blog of car seat techs has a list of recommended seats with in-depth reviews.

I just wanted to point out that not all fire stations have CPST's (Child Passenger Safety Technicians) so if you DO go there you need to make sure the person installing your seat is certified (and their certification is up to date)
Spend some time on this website https://www.car-seat.org/index.php There are lots of CPST's that post there and it's really a wealth of information. A lot of times they can even help you find something that will fit well in your car and be the easiest for you to use.

Great TIP! Lucky for me I have a relative that worked as a Volunteer Fire Fighter & recommends this site: https://www.seatcheck.org/ . It's basically a directory telling you where to go to have someone who is certified check & install car seat. It also gives a complete list of car seat recalls, etc...
