Too much amniotic fluid??? Need answers...

Here's the background...
I had an ultrasound on Wednesday because LO was measuring big. (He weighed in at 6lbs 12 oz at 36 weeks) The doctor just called and said that as he was looking at the scans, he noticed that I have too much amniotic fluid. WTH does that mean? I know that too little AF can bring you to deliver, but what does too much mean?
Anyone ever heard of this or have experience with it?

Re: Too much amniotic fluid??? Need answers...

  • I remember a few ladies on the board when I was on here with DD#1 who had too much amniotic fluid.  Well, only two that I remember actually.  Both babies turned out fine.  There are a lot of factors and causes.  I'm sure your OB will have tests done and additional scans to make sure everything is A-OK.

Is he having you come back in at all?

  • I am going back next week for another ultrasound. I have been extremely healthy this whole pregnancy. Only gained 20 lbs, no GD, etc. Ahh!

  • I think that you should call your doctor's office and ask. There is no other way for you to get absolute peace of mind and/or understand what was meant unless you can actually talk to your doctor.

I know that many statements can be made as if they represent a problem when in actuality - they are just statements. For example, my last ultrasound report read that baby was very large - measuring in the 95% percentile and that my AF level was low-normal. Both of these were cause for concern for me but when I asked - my midwives assured me that all is well.

  • I am on the other end of the spectrum with low fluid, just let me tell you, DONT google it!

I made this mistake and now my mind is racing of everything it could lead to! Just call your doctor and let them tell you all is well or what it means excaltly.

No kidding. Too late! Now I am freaking out. The NP said that the baby is fine and it's not worrying the doctor, but I will still feel better when I hear from him directly. Thinking of you too!

  • I just had the same result. What happened was they had me come back in and take my 1hr Glucose Test again. Too much amniotic fluid can be a symptom of GD and you can have a late onset of it. I failed my 1hr; However being almost 37 weeks pregnant they decided not to do any further testing for it and just treat me as if I have GD. So I'm on a diet now and I have to get weekly NST and another Ultrasound to monitor baby's growth. They also seem to think my boy is a little big. Next week I'm getting a test that supposedly can see how far back my blood sugar has been out of whack to give them a better idea of what they're working with. She also mentioned induction if I go past my due date, assuming if the baby measures big I'll have issues with labor.

I hope that helps. It not the greatest news in the world but it's certainly not the worst that can happen!

  • I had above average amniotic fluid levels with DD when I was around 34 weeks or so. The dr told me not to worry, there could be several different causes and likely everything was fine with the baby. Of course I googled about it and was super worried. Up until that point I had a great pregnancy, no risk factors, totally healthy. At the level II ultrasound my levels had gone down and were on the high end of the normal range. Other than my belly measuring a couple weeks ahead..the pregnancy continued totally normal and my DD was born super healthy at 8 lbs 3 oz at 41 weeks.
  • Take this with a grain of salt.  When they measure amniotic fluid, they measure 4 "pockets" on an ultrasound.  I have weekly biophysicals and one week there were 17cm of AF, and the next week it was something like 25.4cm (with 25.8 being considered high).  So of course I freaked out and googled it...  BIG MISTAKE!  But a week later I went back and it was 15cm.  I asked and was told "oh they must have measured different pockets."  Um...  if there are different pockets, then how is this a reliable test?  I was actually told it's not.  SO...  believe the doc when he says all is well.  It's a stupid test.
  • Do you know what your number was?  I have been on the high end of normal so have had extra u/s.  Yesterday mine put my into the poly whatever stage so now I have a weekly u/s and 2 weekly nsts till baby comes.  It most likely is nothing but can cause extra pressure/stress on the baby so the extra monitoring is to make sure the baby is not distressed.  If he is he comes early.  My ob did not think this would be the case but we are of course playing it safe.
