Old Wives Tales

The baking soda/urine test made me think.  What old wives tales have you heard about the sex of the baby?  What have you tried?  For those of you with kids or that know the sex of the baby, were the OWT right?

Re: Old Wives Tales

  • good post...

i've heard the crazy urine test, the string and ring test, the heartbeat thing that girls are higher/boys are lower.. the chinese gender thing which i swore by for a while because it was right for everyone i looked up but at the same time i thought it was stupid of a chart to tell me what i was having...i remember someone in my family had me do this thing with a fork and spoon a few years ago with my son's pregnancy... apparently if you sat on the spoon it was a girl or vise vera..idk i thought that one was stupid lol

same with me.. I knew my first pregnancy was a boy very early on. I just knew. This time, it's different. I want a girl soo bad, but is it a girl or is it because i want one so bad? it could go either way.
  • I've heard of the heart rate, ring/string test and chinese chart.  I'd never heard of the baking soda test before recently but I think I'll try it. :)  The heart rate thing was right for my boys..theirs was always in the 140's.  This baby's heart rate is in the 160's and 170's so we're curious as to what's in there, but I'm trying not to think too much about it (trying not to get my hopes up one way or another..just hope he/she is healthy).  The Chinese chart was wrong for both of them since it told me they were girls.

  • oh and the OWT about carrying a girl if your face is really pale because she "steals your beauty". There's a bunch more. I've been googling them...

Before I was ever pg I assumed every woman had that "mother's instinct" but now I don't really think so.  (I'm certainly not saying YOU didn't, though!)  We were Team Green with DS and I was pretty sure it was a girl... until about two weeks before I had him.  At that point, I didn't necessarily think it was a boy, I just all of sudden lost that confidence that it was a girl.  Sure enough- boy!

I just wish I could truly differentiate between my gut and my hope.  I had always wanted a boy first, but now, I get excited about tutus and headbands. ha

Old Wives Tale #9: Moodiness and a Little Pecker

If you are really moody, you are having a girl since you have another extra girl hormones in you. Your pregnancy will make you smile and be more happy if you are having a boy because there?s a little penis inside you.

For some reason, this creeps me out.

I definently agree with you, not all women will have this instinct...

  • I know I'm having a girl. As far as OWTs I've tried:

    BOY predictions
    - Ramzi theory (placenta position)
    - Hairier-than-normal legs
    - Ice-cold feet

    NEUTRAL predictions
    - My cravings were 50/50 (craving salt/spicy sometimes and sweet other times)
    - I had no instinct about what this one was, and no dreams!

    GIRL predictions
    - High heart rate (160s; this was right with DD#1, too)
    - Chinese gender chart (this was right with DD#1, too)
    - Baking soda test
    - Sex ratio test: https://www.sexratio.com/test (said 85% girl)
    - Acne/"stealing beauty" (this was right with DD#1, too)
    - Strong m/s / nausea
    - Having odd numbers for both my age and year at time of conception (this one says that if one of those numbers is odd and the other even, it's a boy, but if both are odd or both are even, it's a girl. This was correct for DD#1, too! lol)

For those going Team Green, there is also the OWTs about how high/low you're carrying (when you pop a belly), and also the linea negra (if it stops at your belly button, you're having a girl, but if it goes up above your belly button, you're having a boy. This was right with DD#1).

  • I forgot about the belly and food thing.  I carried VERY low and straight out with boy of my boys so that was correct.  I also craved salty foods with them, so that followed the owt too.  Not sure how I'm carrying yet and I crave fruit more this time around.  I really need to know what I'm having, lol!  Now I need to go do the baking soda and ring test. :)  More things are pointing to girl this time around so we shall see!

This is interesting to me..I've never heard of this before.  It's right for both boys, though.  And if it continues to be right then this one is a boy too.

  • Bake a cake...cracks=girl, no cracks=boy. Two of my cousins and I have done this for previous pregnancy and it was correct.

I haven't done any OWT this pregnancy yet but I plan on it.

  • Lets see, with DD I did the needle and thread trick, the heartbeat and the sweet cravings(I hate chocolate and when I was pg with her, that's all I could think about), tho I NEVER had any morning sickness. With this one, I've tried the baking soda thing, I'm not really craving much of anything, I didn't have any m/s, I haven't done anything else, but I'm pretty certain we are gonna have another girl. :) Which, I'm happy with, either way I would have been thrilled, but DH really wants a boy this time so he is making up things I think to point towards a boy lol. I guess we'll find out when he comes back from JRTC in march.

  • The ring test was true for all 4 of my friend's kids. We did it each time around 10 weeks. The heartbeat one actually holds some truth, but the heartbeats don't fall into their categories till like third trimester (so I have heard.)

  • My mother and grandmother (mom's side, only remaining) only got any kind of sickness when pregnant with girls. Since I wake up in the wee hours of the morning, it's hard to tell if it's my fatigue or morning sickness that creates my nausea, but once I eat it seems to go away. I think the best OWT are the traits you share with family members. We'll see if the little one ends up being a girl since I have gotten sick one time.
