April 2012 Moms

S/O FTM going over due date?

So I've read a lot of people saying that if you are a first time mom you will probably go over your due date.. why do people say this?

My doctor has made no inclination to this and has in fact told me I would more than likely deliver about 2 weeks early.... Im just curious to the reasoning for this...

Me too! My doc said he expects me to deliver around 37 weeks.. I've been curious about going over 40 weeks.

  • I don't think either statement is accurate, how at this point could anyone guess when your baby is coming? Your doctor included in this. I have heard this many times that a persons doctor says they wont' go to term, based on what? You have a big baby, lots of people go over due with big babies. This drives me crazy.

Your baby will come when he or she is ready. No one can guess. I know many women who start to dilate even a month or so before the baby finally comes. And then women who's cervix is thick, long and closed and the Dr tells them they will go over date and then they go into labour that night.

  • I dunno the scientific answer. But, I think it may have to do with your body has never been in labor before and doesn't really know where to start? Like I said, I don't know. I had a scheduled c/s with my first, because he was breech. Then a vbac with my 2nd. I had scheduled a c/s with my 2nd at my 37 week appointment for 39 weeks because I was SO done being pregnant, I was exhausted, swollen, and being a vbac, I couldn't be induced. I went into labor 2 days before my scheduled c.

  • I think when they look at the numbers, the avg. is closer to 41 weeks for most FTMs. But then, it's not weird to be 1-2 weeks early (I was 38.5 with my first).

  • Also I see many FTM go early and many people with their second or third go over there's not really a trend at least from what I see.

  • I want my baby to be fully cooked but if he would like to come out a few days early or on time that would be great. My husband is on school vacation the week the beanie is due. Most of my friends have been late....

  • My doctor swore I was going to go over with DD... I had an appointment the day before I went into labor (I went in because I lost my mucous plug, but I didn't know what was going on at that time... ah, ignorance) and they told me I had a while to go... DD was born exactly two weeks early.  They have no effing clue to be honest - it'll happen when your baby is ready for it to happen!

  • My doctors have been the opposite. I'm due April 28 and they told me not to be surprised if I make it until may 12th! Suddenly I'm a mid-May mama :-/

  • Statistically speaking most FTM's (if left on their own) do go over due, though things may be changing due to the amt of docs that are pushing for induction/not allowing women to go over due AND the amt of women who are trying out "home remedies" to induce starting as early as 36 weeks.

Personal experience: I went over due with my first and had I not allowed induction on the 2nd day over due (but I was young-17-and when my doc offered I was so excited and miserable because of the heat, I said "sure", without understanding the risks) she said I would've easily made it to 2wks over.   My 2nd was also over due, though (even with complications/early labor/ect) and I did go 2wks over due with her.

  • The statistics show that you'll go about 41 weeks and 1 day.  Some people go more than this and some less.  It's just the average of all first time mom's.  I'm sure it takes FTM's bodies a bit longer since they've never done it before.  My body has birthed a baby so it doesn't have to change as dramatically to birth another one.  I believe the average for a 2nd time+ mom is just a little bit lower than a 1st time mom.  Due dates are really just guesses since many people ovulate late/early.  I don't think doctors have any clue right now when the baby will come.

  • I don't think you can really predict it one way or another.  I think the only thing that is safe to say is that you most likely won't go on your due date.

  • At my 12 week appt I asked my dr about what percentage of her patients go past their due date and she said not that many and that most of her patients have their babies 2 or 3 days before thier due dates.  Again I asked on average, but she hasn't once implied to me when i'd be having this little boy.  As miserable as I am at 26 weeks, I really hope I don't go past my due date.  I don't know how i'd function at work!

  • Honestly, I am not sure about other people, I can just tell you my experience. I went exactly one week over my due date. Day seven my water broke and he came. But, I was also 8 days late with my second son and had to be induced or who knows how late he would have been. I seem to just have my children late. However, the doc. has been telling me that this baby could possibly come early (which is hard for me to believe). You just never know. Your body will have your baby when it is ready to have your baby.

  • As pps have said, it's all statistics. You may not know any FTMs who have gone over, but if you look at the data on ALL FTMs, they are statistically more likely to go over. That doesn't mean YOU will. I don't know how significant the relationship is - it might be weak, but it exists.

  • I've heard this too - that FTM's are "usually late", but I proved it not to be true when I knew FOUR girls all due in November (FTM's) and they all were either a few days early or on-time. Age ranges 26 to 29.

  • I thought it was odd that the doc told me he thought I'd go early. I don't really mind either way, so long as she comes safe and sound :)

All of this! I had DS at 39w1d, I'm pretty sure had my EDD been calculated on my o date, he would have been born overdue.

  • Ugh my mom keeps telling me this every time I am trying to get something done ahead of time, she goes you know FTMs are always late, you probably won't have her until mid-April (I'm due on the 6th). I do have a couple friends that both went 2 weeks over on their first, and I know I was almost 2 weeks late. My doc hasn't said one way or another.

However my work allows me an extra 2 weeks off before my due date that doesn't affect my disability leave, and I wasn't planning on taking it, anticipating she's going to be late and I'll have to start using vacation time or something until she gets here. Maybe I should rethink.

This. I've heard/read a few places the average length of a first pregnancy is 41 weeks.

  • With my first, my doc said from 37w that I "wasn't going to make it to my EDD".  I was 3cm at my 36w appt and then 4cm from 37-38w.

Now, we all know that has nothing to do with delivery date.  She said that I was probably going to go early because my "bag of waters was bulging".  She said to be careful because if I drove over a hard bump, it would probably burst!

At my 39w appt, my bag of waters DID BUST during my internal.

HOWEVER, that was 39w according to my LMP.  I was 40+ according to conception.

  • truth is you really never know! I never thought that my 2nd baby would be 5 days later...1st is a due date baby....some FTM's go early and some go late (few of my IRL friends recently had their 1st babies late)

  • I went a week over with DS. The average a FTM goes in to labor I have read is 41 wks 2 days. I wonder if docs say things like "your going to go two weeks early" to play into inductions. Because they have you thinking this, and you go past it you become discouraged and want an induction since you went passed what your doctor told you. Just my .02$.

  • Nobody knows!

Here in the US, doctors calculate our due date 40 weeks from the LMP and say that a FTM is more likely to deliver one week after, at 41 weeks.

In France (where I come from), doctors calculate our due date 41 weeks from the LMP and say that a FTM is more likely to deliver 1-2 weeks before her due date.

According to that, I am due April 14th in the US / April 21st in France and should deliver between April 7th and April 21st.

We'll see what my baby boy thinks about that ;o)
