Are contractions sharp pains?

I've been getting a sharp pain on and off sice about 9:15 this morning in the lower right side of my belly. The first time it happened I thought maybe I was sitting in a weird position or baby was stretching, but they seem to be happening closer together and for longer periods of time. I have an OB apt in an hour so I just got home from work...it happened twice on my ride home which took about 35 minutes.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, especially bc I'm going to the dr in an hour, but I'm curious if I should be timing these pains?

Re: Are contractions sharp pains?

  • I keep having these little sharp pains at night under my belly. I tell the Dr this every time she asks if I've been having contractions and she says no, those are just growing/stretching pains. She said when you get contractions you will KNOW. Are your pains happening in just that one spot or are they a radiating pain like menstrual cramps?

  • I would say ctx are more like squeezing pains that radiate around your midsection.

This.  Like a very painful cramp.  And I don't mean the contractions are always so painful but I mean compared to just a regular cramp they're painful.

  • The pain was in the same area for the first couple of times, but the last time it happened...like 10 min ago...it was on the left side. It's probably just LO stretching. I'll just tell her about it at my apt. Thanks everyone!

  • I've had realy sharp pains low on and off since 28 weeks. I was also having contractions at the time and I was sent to L&D to have a non-stress test done. My Dr said it was RLP just a very extreme case of it. I've had it off and on since then and every now and then it will get so bad that I cant even move. I found that a warm bath is the only thing that dulls the pain.
