This kinda goes along with KitCat's post yesterday...
I feel like the SAHM board has headed in a new direction lately and I don't think I like where it's going.
I've noticed some subtle (and not so subtle) shifts, too.
I've been thinking this for awhile- and my UO goes along with it.
I get that this board is generally a "nice" board where people don't get needlessly flamed, but when someone does get offended, or a heated discussion starts, I don't get why people flip out and go on and on about how they thought this was the nice board and then make obnoxious generalizations like "well you're ALL right and I'm wrong and I'm a bad mother/person/pet owner/stamp collector" or whatever.
For me I feel like the board has gotten really judgy or something. I don't mind a good heated discussion but lately it seems like there is a lot of having to prove people wrong. We all come from different walks of life and we are never going to all agree, so if you don't agree, fine, say that, but you don't need to say it over and over and over until the person you disagree with if feeling awful. I don't feel like I'm explaining myself very well. I don't think people should flip out and make obnoxious generalations, but I also feel as if this board didn't used to be so serious. Someone could make a comment without getting attacked so much. Maybe I didn't get enough sleep last night and I'm talking crazy.
I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about Paula Deen while many of the same people are Pioneer Woman lovers. Her recipes are just as terrible for you and the calorie counts are off the charts.
My UO is I hate "mommy guilt" and I think it serves no other purpose than to AW yourself out on the board. I don't get it...guilt should be reserved for things like not being able to provide for your child because you're smoking too much crack...no because you need/want a date night with your husband. Give me a break.
I don't know if crackheads feel much guilt?
I understand "mommy guilt" I often feel guilty, but once I get out of the house and some time to myself it diminishes quickly and I feel better when I'm back with baby
OK, maybe I should have said...guilt they SHOULD feel.
I don't understand why everyone is all up in arms over Paula Deen.
Common sense should tell you that her food is not healthy and should be enjoyed in moderation. What happened to personal responsibility?
Next thing you know, we'll be blaming Sandra Lee for our drinking problems!
Agree 100%. Paula is a symptom of the problem. The problem is people are too lazy to learn what they should eat and fall for advertising and marketing and cheap prices. Read In Defense of Food. I feel bad that Paula has diabetes but it's not like she doesn't know how badly she has eaten for years. Also anyone that eats her cooking a majority of the time isn't very bright.
My thoughts on Paula Deen are that I can cook like her but I don't eat like that. Just because she has a cooking show and is chubby doesn't mean she cooks like that at home every night. Her diet didn't help her diabetes situation but lets face it that can be poor genetics too. We all have something genetically waiting to get out it's just how you take care of your self that will determine how long you can go before it happens. She's an older lady. I really think it doesn't have much to do with her personal diet or she would have gotten this years ago.
My UO is I don't care for Pioneer Woman,, no real reason other than she just bugs the crud out of me.
I also don't get judgy homeschooling moms. It's like the breast/formula and many other issues like that. So what if I send my kids to school and you think they will be stupid. They are MY stupid kids so don't worry about it.
My UO - I hate bridal showers and baby showers. Out of the 2, I like bridal showers more.
Ugh, me too. So much so, that other than the tiny baby shower my BFF gave me and another friend simultaneously, that I asked to not have a big baby shower.
My SAHD neighbor just informed me that it isn't rare for him to leave his 1 yo in the car while he runs into the grocery store or something. My UO - while I think that is dumb and CRAZYBUSINESS I don't feel that I have any right or need to say anything. This also goes for if I saw a random baby in a random car....assuming the weather wasn't hot and the baby was going to die from the heat - that is an exception for me. In other situations, their babies their deal. I'm not going to mind their business.
Ya'll crack me up about Paula Dean. Do ya'll REALLY think Paula Deen (or Ree Drummond) actually eat the way they cook all the time? The woman has diabetes because she is older, smokes, doesn't excercise, AND doesn't eat well...plus, there's probably a hereditary factor in there as well. I also think the way she cooks technically wouldn't give you diabetes as much as it would a heart attack, but I'm no doctor.
I highly doubt it.
I am from the south, and I love, love, LOVE southern food...but I'm not going to be eating grits and bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning or chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes for dinner ever night. I don't even know if I eat that stuff once a year.
The reason America is fat has very little (if not nothing) to do with Paula Dean, IMO.
She was on The Chew yesterday and said that she doesn't eat the things she makes on the show normally. She talked about everything being in moderation and how no one should eat that kind of food everyday.
I did find it interesting though when she was talking about risk factors that lead to type 2 diabetes she never mentioned weight. She mentioned age, genetics, diet, and exercise (which I guess could cover weight but doesn't necessarily). My sister is "pre diabetic" and she eats healthier than anyone I know and exercises too, but it is her weight (she is technically obese) that is making her hypoglycemic, not her diet or lack of exercise.

Sharon- How can you be a very healthy eater w/ exercise and be obese? I can't make heads or tails of that! Does she just eat constantly or something? This is mind boggling to me!

I'm not Sharon, but my best friend falls into this category. For her, it's genetics. She walks 2-3 miles a day, does classes at the gym, eats very healthy, doesn't drink soda or anything and rarely eats out. Yet, still she's obese. Every single woman in her family is, she's on the smaller end in comparison to the rest but logic says that she should be a lot thinner then she is. She's tried to get into running or some other higher activity cardio but she also has a size G chest so it's really uncomfortable for her even with two sports bras on to do anything high impact.

We should live in a world where you CAN leave them in the car for a minute. I don't think there are crazy kidnappers waiting for this to occur. If there is a risk it's from car thieves and people who can't mind their own business. I have left mine in the car to go into a bagel store near my house and once when it was pouring to by milk in another store. Both places I could park off the street, in front of the door where I could see the car the whole time. If I noticed a baby in a car in a big empty parking lot I might stick around for a bit to see if everything was okay. But I agree with you - their deal!

I don't know! She eats soooo healthy, no white flour, no dairy (lactose intolerant), hardly any fats, mostly vegetables really. She seriously eats healthier than anyone I know. Plus she exercises at least 5 times a week. She even makes sure to hit the gym when she is on vacation. She has just been overweight her whole life. It is very frustrating for her. She has had tons of tests run also, to see if there is some problem like a thyroid condition but nothing.

I agree. Dates nights and "me" time should be requirements for any SAHM and nothing to feel guilty about.
I, however, am experiencing a different sort of mommy guilt. A few days ago DS1 thought he would be helpful and bring me the vacuum....and he dropped the stupid thing on his foot. Nothing is broken, but his toenail is a pretty shade of blue and I feel like MOTY right now.
That sucks...but you shouldn't feel guilty! It was an accident...it's not like you grabbed it from him and smushed him with it! Sorry about that though, more little toe!
My UO is that I still really like Paula Deen. I made a trip to Savannah to eat at her restaurant and it was the best fried chicken I have ever eaten! I don't think it's anybody's business that she has diabetes. I have several of her cook books and I'm making her BBQ meatloaf for dinner tonight. She reminds me of my Mom and Grandmas, and I have been hooked on her for several years since she did a show where she was making recipes from her Mom, Grandma, and several of her Aunts who had passed away. She was in tears at the end of the show talking about how by making the food of her childhood she felt closer to the loved ones she has lost. I completely understand that, and I like her. Of course if you eat her food every day you will have health consequences! There is no one on Food Network who you could literally eat their food every day and not get fat! Come on!

Wow. That has got to be so very frustrating...almost unbelievable that it could happen.
I don't believe that you can be overweight without having an eating issue. I'm sorry, you can't eat all veggies and work out 5 times per week and be overweight, maybe 5-10 pounds, but not significantly overweight... not happening. UNLESS there is a major physical health problem that I can't imagine not being diagnosed such as extremely low thyroid etc. These people must have eating issues behind closed doors, there are a ton of people like that (after having spent years on the weight watchers message boards when I was losing my 155 pounds), heard all kinds of stories about how nobody knew how much they ate, they exercised etc. It all boils down to calories in/calories out... some lose slower, but just saying once again... you can't work out 5x a week and eat all veggies and health foods and have a major overweight issue. That's my second UO this week.

I will tag on to this that I don't think 98% of "eating issues" are simply "eating issues." I don't think it is likely to be overweight without having OTHER issues....says the gal who doesn't even TRY to deny this fact about myself. I'm 20-30lbs heavier than I would like to be because of definite issues - not because I just think food is good....although I think food is good. So I guess now the tag on FFC is that when I see overweight people, I can't help but be curious about the cause/their "issues"
My UO - I hate bridal showers and baby showers. Out of the 2, I like bridal showers more.
OMG me too. SO glad I"m not the only one who feels this way. Don't get me wrong, I am totally happy for whatever friend of family member is getting married or having a baby. I just find them mind numbingly boring. Sitting there watching someone open gift after gift. And the stupid games they make you play? Ugh.
I know that makes me sound like a total B. I'm always grateful for an invite and love sharing in someone's special day, but dude.....

This is like my mom, to a T. My mom eats small portions and makes very healthy choices, kayaks, snowshoes, goes hiking, walks marathons and trains year round for them. She has a personal trainer, and is really knowledgeable about diet and nutrition.... but she will always be overweight.
I don't think she's "obese" necessarily, but she is def overweight and always has been, as long as I can remember. Her metabolism is just really slow and it's harder for your body to lose weight after menopause.
A big part of it is a genetic predisposition. If you saw a picture of my grandma, her three daughters, and their three daughters... you'd know what I'm talking about. We are as different as we could be in terms of lifestyle and we all look the same (except me, but I'm the youngest...and we'll see what happens after I have this baby. )
It's those damn German-American genes. We come from excellent pioneer stock.
I'm not going to go back and quote anyone, but I too, also hate going to other showers. Sometimes they are sort of fun, but I hate playing dorky games and it's sooooo dull and boring watching someone else open gifts. I've had several showers held for me and I always have tried to rush through those parts because I hated them. I wish people would have asked me if I wanted them because I probably would have put my foot down and said no, and if anything, let's just get together as a family, not this "ladies only, game silliness, delicate treats" crap.
FWIW about the board... I am quite the newbie here, but I haven't noticed any board drama. I must be missing all of it or just completely don't notice it. I like this board a lot and there are fun, intelligent women on this board and I'm glad that I haven't been sho-shoed from the board...yet!

Shall I run and hide now???
I agree with all of this. And as we get older, we need fewer calories to maintain our weight. There are different body frames for sure and that is why there is a range of recommended weights on a chart, but obesity occurs because you are eating too much, whether you're eating healthy food or crap. I have weight to lose and I totally know it's because I like generous portions. I'm constantly having to self regulate better on size of meal, even though often that meal is food that is considered great for you. You never know what someone is eating or drinking in their alone time either. This is all a convoluted way of saying that I don't think weight problems just appear out of thin air, rare medical case aside.

I still haven't learned to keep my UOs to myself... but mine are I don't get baby led weaning... at all.
LOL
DD hated baby food so she was on table food by 7 months. I just used common sense about what to give her.
I understand it as in the directions, just don't get why it's such a popular thing now. I certainly don't care/judge but just saying I don't "get it", people say its so they have a healthy relationship with food, and I think that's silly... how many of us have healthy relationships (okay, I don't but the majority do) and were fed baby food. I heard someone on here mention that they made a promise not to ever put anything in the baby's mouth and only wanted them to do it themselves... but they're babies! Feed em'!! That is just my opinion though.
I think that may be why there are so many chunky monkeys out there. Cute as they are, I know I was shocked when LO was consistently on the low end of the weight chart. He was not really thin by any means and had great baby cheeks, but not the rolls I see on a lot of babes. Our pedi said he was fine, and DH and I surmised he was just "skinny" in contrast to all the chubby babies.
I see your reasoning, but this did hit a cord with me. DD has always been in the 90% for weight and height. People are always commenting on what a big baby she is and sometimes the say things that are mean (I've had people call her names like fatso.) But she was EBF until 6 months and even now, we do not push the solids. My dr. says that she is fine with her weight and that EBF babies would rarely be overweight. This has lead me to the conclusion that "normal weight" can be different for everyone. Not trying to go off on a rant and I'm not saying you are completely wrong in your observation. This just struck a chord with me,
I completely agree with Toadstool. My DD is in the 98% for height and weight, has been since she was born at 9lbs 7oz. She is EBF with food only for "fun", so she maybe eats a couple of ounces of food a day. This is completely genetic. I was the same size and am completely healthy today and am not overweight. I am also not saying that some babies that are this big are not overfed, but please do not believe that all bigger babies are that way because of that. Plus I wouldn't trade her rolls or chubby cheeks any day

No flames, but while I don't know about other people that quite truly isn't the case for me. I am quite overweight, although working on it , and I really don't have issues. My parents are wonderful, loving, and still happily together. I had a best friend and a good group of friends all throughout school. I was never bullied or teased. I didn't rebel as a teen. I love my DH and I feel very loved. My kids are great, I like where I live and my station in life. I have struggled with my weight my whole life, although I did lose quite a bit of weight 10 years ago I gained it back. I really do just need to eat less and exercise more, which I'm making my goal because I don't want to give my daughter issues!

I don't know you so obviously I can't tell you that you are incorrect, but just for the record, I could say all that you have said - I have a glorious life - but I am 30 lbs over weight because I am an immediate gratification person, am not good working hard to get what I want, have difficulty embracing boredom/downtime, and am a perfectionist who "punishes" (its not THAT dramatic) myself when I fail. Those may not be therapy seeking issues, but for me, i don't have these extra pounds because food taste good. I have the weight because of my "issues."
I'm standing by my claim, but you may certainly be the exception!
ETA: oh, and clearly thin people can have issues too, theirs just don't manifest in the same way....so, I'm not saying if you have issues, you are overweight. I'm saying if you are overweight, there is something other than the actual food that is to blame. And you have the best chance of maintaining a lower weight if you can figure out what that is. Done.
Are UOs also FF?
I will tag on to this that I don't think 98% of "eating issues" are simply "eating issues." I don't think it is likely to be overweight without having OTHER issues....says the gal who doesn't even TRY to deny this fact about myself. I'm 20-30lbs heavier than I would like to be because of definite issues - not because I just think food is good....although I think food is good. So I guess now the tag on FFC is that when I see overweight people, I can't help but be curious about the cause/their "issues"
Shall I run and hide now???
No flames, but while I don't know about other people that quite truly isn't the case for me. I am quite overweight, although working on it , and I really don't have issues. My parents are wonderful, loving, and still happily together. I had a best friend and a good group of friends all throughout school. I was never bullied or teased. I didn't rebel as a teen. I love my DH and I feel very loved. My kids are great, I like where I live and my station in life. Ah, that makes more sense, I thought you meant therapy esque issues.

Re: **UO Thursday**
OK, maybe I should have said...guilt they SHOULD feel.
Ugh, me too. So much so, that other than the tiny baby shower my BFF gave me and another friend simultaneously, that I asked to not have a big baby shower.
That sucks...but you shouldn't feel guilty! It was an accident...it's not like you grabbed it from him and smushed him with it!
Sorry about that though, more little toe!
Wow. That has got to be so very frustrating...almost unbelievable that it could happen.

We are as different as we could be in terms of lifestyle and we all look the same (except me, but I'm the youngest...and we'll see what happens after I have this baby.
)
Certified Veterinary Technician / SAHM
I completely agree with Toadstool. My DD is in the 98% for height and weight, has been since she was born at 9lbs 7oz. She is EBF with food only for "fun", so she maybe eats a couple of ounces of food a day. This is completely genetic. I was the same size and am completely healthy today and am not overweight. I am also not saying that some babies that are this big are not overfed, but please do not believe that all bigger babies are that way because of that. Plus I wouldn't trade her rolls or chubby cheeks any day
