Can you explain the plural and possessive rules for surnames? If you are referring to a couple with the last name of Smith, would you say the Smith's house or Smiths'?  Surely it's not Smiths's, right?

  • The rule for plural possessives is unchanged (add an apostrophe to the plural form). It would be:

    That is Jay Smith's house.

    That is the Smiths' house.

    If, by some stroke of ill fortune, a person's last name were "Smiths," it would be:

    That is Jay Smiths's house. (A parallel example might be That is Jay Jones's house. but That is the Joneses' house.)
