Doggy Dermatologist...really?

Not sure what's worse...the fact one exists or the fact I am considering taking my dog to see her.  My poor Boston has the worst skin allergies and vet has done all they can.

Re: Doggy Dermatologist...really?

  • Unless it's ridiculously expensive, I say go for it. My mom has a yorkie that has skin allergies and the poor thing loses her hair, has scabs all over and is so uncomfortable. I used to be in the veterinary world, so I understand how weird it seems, but hopefully it will help!

If it makes you feel any better 2 days after adopting our 2nd dog we found out that she had a heart murmur and had to take her to a cardiologist to have surgery :(

  • I'm sure you've tried all the diet stuff, but my Vizsla had big skin problems before we switched to a grain free, corn free food. We also give him coconut oil and salmon oil. It helps a lot. I swear I've seen every specialist except a doggy psychologist.

  • I'm actually thinking about asking our vet for a referral to one when I take our Peke for his check up next month.  He's had a horrible dry patch for a month or 2 now & I'm kind of surprised he hasn't made himself bleed with how much he scratches.  He's never had this issue before; he's only going to be 5 on Valentine's Day. I'm scared of how much it will cost but the poor thing is so itchy.

  • Oh Kimmy that sucks.   It turned out okay?

Poor Norman has always had skin allergies but it has gotten worse as he gets older.  He's been on steroids, antibiotics and immunosuppresants for the past 3 months.  Last 2 years we have tried prescription food, special shampoos and all of the above mentioned.  The steroids make it better for awhile but he just breaks out again.  We just can't keep him on the steroids since it is so hard on his body.  His whole neck and belly gets scabbed over from him scratching.

  • Yes, thank goodness. A small (but pricey!) surgery and she was just fine!

Skin allergies are the worst :( especially when even steroids don't help. I would suggest at least checking out the dermatologist. Who knows maybe there are some new medications they could try? My other dog is itchy, but mostly from dry skin, so I understand how hard it is to watch them be uncomfortable. :(
