Sushi

Ok girls, so how safe is sushi really? What can I eat if I can eat anything at all? I had made a sushi date for dinner next week with a friend but didn't really want ti tell her yet. So I need to figure out if I need to make up an excuse or if we can still go for sushi

Yep! Maybe get there early and ask a server for a few recommendations that are cooked so you don't have to do it in front of your friend.

Very much this. I'm sure there are some yummy cooked solutions.

  • I know some places offer veggie rolls some with avacado and cream cheese and they are very good.
  • shrimp rolls are cooked too. You just have to make sure there is nothing raw on it. Also, many places with have a label somewhere that says what is raw and what is cooked.

  • There are so many delicious things you can get.  Shumai, gyoza, avocado salad, miso soup etc for appetizer.  As others have said, California roll, shrimp tempura roll (make sure there's no tobiko or spicy tuna on top), spider roll (this is fried crab - soooo goood!), veggie rolls (avocado, sweet potato)... I could go on but now I'm so hungry I may have to eat dinner early.  Point is, there are lots of yummy cooked sushi options, just make sure they don't have the egg roe (tobiko) on top because that is raw. ::::drools::::

  • according to the help line for my OB, any type of sushi (sashimi included) is ok as long as it isn't shellfish.  I take that with a grain of salt though as their reasoning is that studies can't find conclusive evidence that sushi is bad for you (as long as its fresh and from a clean business).  I mean, how do women in pacific island/asian areas do it where their diet is mainly fish?

Then again thats the "advice" nuber.  Both my OB and Midwife say no.

Regardless, as i've had some trouble getting pregnant, i'm not doing any sushi or alcohol (studies also say a glass of wine a day/week aren't bad either depending on the study).

This. Seriously. What do you ladies think Japanese women eat for 9 months??

If the place is clean and you trust them, go for the raw stuff. Just avoid high mercury content fish. I love hamachi sashimi, but it's middle of the road on mercury content, so I limit it to a few bites.

I would avoid raw bivalves, like oysters and such. If you're going to pick up a bug, these are a far more likely culprit because of where they are cultivated.

This just made me hungry.  I went for sushi last week and got the spider roll too.  missed my rainbow roll and sashimi but beggars can't be choosers.

I also agree that if the place is super trust worthy, you technically don't have to worry about raw.  The danger in raw fish is that you can get serious food poisoning, which could result in a mc.  I stay away from it in the first trimester but did indulge a couple of times later on with my DS.  I'm half Japanese and my grandmother (who has 12 children) would constantly tell me "I ate sushi with my children and they just kept popping out.  American's are just scared of Asian food" haha
