March 2012 Moms

Online class with a newborn

I'm planning on going back to get my MSN after the baby is born since I'm gonna be a SAHM I'm gonna take night classes a few times a week.

I'm out of work now on modified bed rest and was thinking about taking an online Statics course that would start Jan 20th and end in May.

I'm not sure if this is crazy or not. What you do guys think?

Update: Its a statics course and I'm not sure honestly if that makes it easier or harder. My thinking was that a Math class would be to much discussion and paper writing.

I emailed my professor and he said that I have his full support to during the mth. of March. I'm kinda freaked out but kinda excited. I may just do it.

Re: Online class with a newborn

  • I'm getting my MBA now and moved to the online program a few months ago to get through the birth and my maternity leave. So far, its been great. I finished my stats class a few weeks back, that was a more difficult class to take online if you aren't already comfy with stats, but it is doable.  Good luck!

  • Honestly, I would email the professor and see what s/he says about you possibly missing any deadlines right around your due date (and if you can have extensions or any assignment early so it can get done or if they drop so many grades, etc).  My SiL who is due in Feb had to drop an online class she was taking for grad school because the professor didn't want to accommodate her needing possibly a week of instruction being up online and open for her to get to after her LO is born.

  • I would email the prof and see if you can work ahead now while you've got the time, with the understanding that you'll be out for a week or so when the baby is actually born.

This is what I did for a Finance class and she was more than happy to accommodate.

  • They can never seem to manage to do online classes on Teen Mom so I don't know if it's doable...

  • Def email professor. As long as you can have a week-2 weeks deadline free you should be fine.  You will have plenty of time to do schoolwork with a little baby in the house.  They don't do much for a few months :)  Now when they're 3 years old, it's a different story!

  • took an online class when DS was 2months to 6months and it was hard. Passed but wouldn't do it again.

Best of luck to you :)

    Really?? Hmm

I'm an adult with a stable home in a loving supportive marriage.

Not a 16 year old pot smoker that lives in her car, but thanks for the comparison. Very helpful

  • I'm taking 6 hours.  I'm only worried about any projects/tests that overlap the time I'm due, and so far in looking over the syllabus I'm fine. I figure easier to get it done now while LO is little and not wait until they're older and in all kinds of activities.
  • I think it's doable but it will be tough.  I think your biggest obstacle will be sleep deprivation working against you.  I think if you play your cards right you might be able to do it.  If any friends or family can watch the baby while you study or take tests then it will be a little more easy.

    Wow.....two totally different situations.

I just finished my masters.....some classes were online and I found those to be the most time consuming.......posting to message boards, group projects, blogs, and a lot of papers.    I don't think I would personally do it, but if your professor is supportive and your hubby can help you so you can actually get some work done, I say go for it!

  • I teach online at multiple schools. There are some classes where the students have to be on during certain times of the day to do a live chat or broadcast. These types of classes would be much more difficult with a newborn than say a class where you can do things on your own time.

I will tell you to contact your teacher prior to your class and let her know what is going on. Tell her that you are dedicated and that hopefully you two can work together to make this a positive educational experience. If you miss an assignment and then give her/him the reason chances are they will not believe you. You would be AMAZED at the lies and tall tales I have been told over the internet. Hopefully you will have an understanding teacher who is willing to work with you and help you along your way. Online teachers want communication so it is good to start with that.

    Good luck!

  • I am just finishing up the last class for my program and purposefully rearranged my schedule to finish before the boys come.  I know that I wouldn't be able to do it, but I'm having twins.  "Just one", I think would be more doable.  I know another student who had baby #3 during the program.  She had #2 during another online program and told me that she would just nurse while doing school work.  So it is doable.

    Good luck!!

  • I have taken several online classes and am now an online teacher. I personally wouldn't recommend it. But, I do like the suggestions to contact proferssors ahead of time. Online classes can be very demanding and juggling that with getting used to parenthood sounds quite difficult to me.

Simma down now Ms. Defensive! It was a joke (just like that entire show). Suppose I should have added a wink face but I thought the three dots would suffice. Meh whatever.

Oh good. Oh man Jenelle and Kieffer. Winners right there. My favorite part about her segments on the show is listening to the way her mom talks. "Janow! You need to dump dat boyfwiend Kieffa." Her accent gets me every time.

Good luck with the online classes. I think it will be challenging but as long as you have focus you can definitely do it. Just don't procrastinate!

  • I am working on my Masters in Education right now online. This semester I am taking two classes the first 8 wks which means they are done March 2. My summer classes won't start until June. I think if you have an open line of communication with your professor you should be fine.

  • Thank you for posting this! I am going through the same thing--online graduate course (in physics) that runs from Feb. 6th to April 27th...so my due date March 20th, is right smack in the middle of the course. I read this thread, then emailed the professor last night. He is willing to work with me on due dates for assignments around when I give birth and seems really nice about it so I am relieved.

I would not choose to be in this situation but I really need to take a course this spring and another this summer to get certified to teach another area (I'm a high school teacher) so that I can keep my job in my school district next year.  It's going to suck for awhile but I think I can do it.
