what do you give for a cough?

my 3 year old hasnt slept for 2 nights. Crappy cough and now 103. I have a 4 week old and so so need my 3 year old to sleep.

I am waiting for pedi to call back. I have given her bendadryl and it has not done anything (per pedi from other coughs). I read no cough medicine and am waiting to confirm that.

Any suggestions?

  • I buy Kids Relief Cough & Cold Syrup by Homeolab. You can find it on Amazon. They have several different ones for all different types of colds. I usually buy 2 of each and when I open up the 2nd one I order more.

  • Just saw my pedi with a similar ? And she told me nothing, sadly. Cough meds aren't recommended by the AAP until 6! She recommended Benadryl and a humidifier and Tylenol or Motrin for fevers. Bummer... Sorry you're going through it!

  • I use Vapor Rub (the baby one) when he's congested and coughing in addition to the dehumidifier.

  • Our standard practice for DD's coughs is a dose of ibuprofen (great for fever, discomfort, and any swelling assoc with cough) and 1 tsp honey before nap and bedtime. Tried this after I saw a study that said that honey actually worked better than most OTC cough medicine. Several ladies where I work (nursing home) also tell me this is what they gave their kids. It hasn't failed us yet.

During the winter we also run a humidifier.

  • Thanks all! My pedi actually said delsym was good to use.

I am going to get honey later and try that too, and turn on the humidifier.

I am just praying my 4 week old doesnt get it.

  • Glad you got some help.  Try pumping her with chamomile tea with honey -- make it like you would normally and pour over just enough ice in a sippy or take n' toss to make it cool enough to drink but still decently warm.

  • Ari's pedi said if they are congested too, give saline nasal spray. The sinus drainage is part of what causes the cough. It's worked for us. Cough medicines are supposedly bunk & aren't rec'd anyway.

  • I give this:  https://www.hylands.com/products/nighttime-cold.php

DH and I also take it when we are sick.  DH is sensitive to medicine and you just don't wake with the hangover of other adult medicine.  I found with this and increased water intake during the day that LOs do better at night.  I also use the vics plug ins.

  • Our pedi has given the okay for 1/2tsp of delsym since DD was 2yrs old and it does seem to help.  I also use the Pediacare Gentle Vapors plug-ins which help too.

  • Elderberry Syrup or a teaspoon of local honey

  • Our pedi says no cough meds but I found Hyland's cold n Cough at Target the other day and we tried it out. It says for age 2+. It doesn't get rid of the cough altogether, but it definitely helps relieve it a little bit. We run the cool mist humidifier all night and I also give DD a breathing treatment with albuterol when she's wheezing, but not just for a cough. The baby rub also helps a lot too.

  • the folks who make the saline nose drops also make a honey exlir for coughs. since dd is too young for cough medicine, this is the next best thing. the honey coats and soothes the throat quieting the cough.
