Carcinogens/Flame retardant in Car Seats?

Apparently I am about 6 months behind on the news...  but my FIL informed us recently about a study that found the presence of cancer-causing flame retardant chemicals in many baby products, including car seats.  DH and I read the article (link below) and now DH is freaking out about our car seat being listed as one of the worst (Britax Marathon 70 Jet Set).  DS is almost 3, so he has been in this car seat about two years...

I am somewhat concerned, but at the same time, it sounds like 80% or more of carseats have some of these chemicals, so it isn't even avoidable (?).  DH wants to run out and buy a new carseat today, but even if that were the solution, what would I buy???

What are your thoughts???

Re: Carcinogens/Flame retardant in Car Seats?

  • I am admittedly pretty cautious when in comes to what I expose DD too. However, I think this carcinogen thing gets a little out of control sometimes. IMO carseats are to protect LO from a car accident. The chances of which are MUCH greater then a miniscule amt of some chemical giving her cancer. I had a friend on FB freaking out because in CA McD's now has to post a notice about carcinogens. Again I think this is the wrong focus. Eatting too much McD's is going to cause alot more obesity and heart disease before it causes cancer from some barely detectable chemical.

  • Admittedly I'm not very knowledgeable about specific flame retardant chemicals, but kids pajamas have them and so do their mattresses, as do other things in any house - probably the couch and other fabrics... all of which your kid spends a lot more time around than they do in a carseat.

My point being it would be a waste of money to rush out and buy a new carseat without first investigating what else your child is exposed to and making a conscious decision to avoid flame retardant chemicals in other products.

Married June '03. DS born Jan '09. DD born Feb '12. No, we didn't choose to be childless for the first 6 years, only the first 3.
