Babies: 9 - 12 Months

fage yogurt

Do I have to give my 10 month old full fat fage or is it ok to give her the 2%?  Not that I am trying to put her on a diet or anything I was just wondering cause often times we have a big jug of the 2%.

What's the story with full fat vs 2% in general?  I have mixed the full fat fage with fresh fruit and she likes that better than the yo baby it seems.  She is otherwise on breastmilk and purees, transitioning to chunkier foods but its been a bit of a struggle with her on that.

thoughts?

  • It's ok to give 2%. I can't seem to find the full fat anywhere!

Ditto this!  The recommendations seem to make it sound like you can get it at every store...but it's not everywhere around here!

  • greek yogurt was just the topic on the wholesomebabyfood blog the other day

she said full fat "Babies shouldn?t have low-fat or no-fat dairy products.  Lucky babies, they need the fat and will benefit not only from the fat itself, but from the extra-creaminess that comes along with it!  Pediatricians typically recommend that toddlers be switched to low-fat dairy products around the age of 24 months (2 yrs)."

  • I agree. I live in NYC and thought I just had bad luck at my local Queens grocery but sent my DH out to get some and he said all he could find was 0% or 2% as well.  Everyone is on a diet out here!! ha ha

Ok I wanted to just make sure she wouldn't have a hard time digesting it or something like that. Thanks!

  • You should consider that Greek yogurt is strained of the whey (the liquid on top) which is very nutritious, maybe the most nutritious part.

  • good point Twirly I never knew that.  What kind of yogurt is everyone giving their baby? I would most likely do plain and add fresh fruit cause they all seem high in sugar no?

  • I find the full fat Fage in the organic section of my grocery store and usually just get a big tub of it.  DS eats it every day for breakfast so it's gone before it expires.  I buy 0% for myself.  I do give him the 0% in a pinch but I want him to get the fat so I try not to make a habit out of it.
