What does it mean that DS looks at my hand when I point at something instead of looking at the object I'm pointing at (or in the direction I'm pointing)? I see that on all kinds of checklists about developmental delays and language delays and ASDs, but nowhere does it say exactly what it means for a child to do that or whether it's a serious/definite indicator of some specific problem. I get that it means they don't understand the concept of showing another thing, and that they're being overly literal (for lack of a better word) by looking at your hand, but can anyone offer any additional insight? TIA!
Re: Looks at my hand when I point
Yep, I definitely know that there's no one indicator that guarantees any specific diagnosis - I was just curious about the significance of this behavior that I noticed.
Thanks for your detailed and informative response. Lots to think about! DS is very interested in the world around him and constantly getting into EVERYTHING, but I do think he's bad at reading social cues and understanding what people mean a lot of the time.
