Preemies

Go out with preemie

My son will be 3 weeks tomorrow and still only 5lbs 4oz.  My husband is worried about taking him places and even 2 hours to visit my family.  I understand his concern with it being flu season and the risk of RSV with our LO.  We have been in complete lock down since we came home from the hospital.  I don't want to take DS to mall or anything, just maybe to visit friends and family, but DH is being really stern with his view.  I was wondering how long you are waiting or did wait to start taking LO out and about?  Is there a certain lb that you are waiting/waited or a certain age of LO?

Re: Go out with preemie

  • I would check with your pedi and see what he says.  I know some ladies with micropremies are on lock down all flu season.  Ds was born at 34 weeks and pedi let me take him out and visit as long as he wasn't passed around.

  • It isn't really about weight, but lung and immune system strength. We had a micro-preemie and were pretty much on lockdown from September to April. We DID however, take her to my mother's for Christmas, which included a 3 hour flight. We gave family members strict instructions, however, to not come even in my mom's house if they had so much as a sniffle; everyone had to wash their hands before holding her, and we didn't go out to eat.

Maybe you guys can come to a compromise and wait a month or two, until the worst of flu season is over? You could ask your doctor for advice, but they tend to err on the side of caution.

  • Ask your pediatrician. My son was born 1/25/11 at 26 weeks and came home 4/6.  We didn't leave the house with him until the end of May (per our pediatrician's recommendation).  This year, we haven't been quite as strict, but we haven't let him around other kids since Halloween.  We probably won't allow him around people as much as possible until the end of flu season.  It runs through April here.

  • Hmm, that'a a tough one!  I might be on the conservative side on this one because it freaks me out when people take full term babies out in public when they're newborns.  My friend took her LO (born @ 38 wks) to Walmart at 2 or 3 weeks old. That just freaks me out!

LO was 35 wks and came home at 39 wks (4 lbs 10 ozs when he came home), and the NICU basically said to keep him home until his 8 wk shots!  It was the summer, so I personally would follow the same guideline especially since it's flu and RSV season.

  • We did not take our LO out until his due date. It was difficult, but that was what the doctor had suggested. He had also suggested having the LO stay away from school aged kids, ANY kids in school. We were told just b/c people are washing their hands does not mean they are not carrying a virus and spreading it as they breathe on your child and that holds true for more school-aged children. This was even more difficult since my husband has 3 younger brothers in high school, but it was worth it he never got sick.
  • I had a 31 weeker born in December. He came home in Feb. We were on lock down until Cold/Flu and RSV season was over in May.

  • I am going to offer another opinion.  No one ever told me to keep a child in.  The day she came home from the hospital, she went shopping with me.

I probably wouldn't have gone shopping that day but she came early, and came home earlier then expected so we litterally had NOTHING (a size 3-6 sleeper, and crib, and exactly 1 bottle).

  • I have a 31 weeker and our pedi told us we can go out, just have her covered, and don't pass her around. It's basic common sense, even with a full term baby during flu/rsv season. If I stayed home all the time I would go nuts.

  • Our pedi told us in an "ermergency situation" we can take her out but if we need to run to the food store and there is no one else around she obviously needs to come with me.  I feel that if her car seat is in her stroller and both canopies are shut closing off any air getting in there and having a blanket over her stroller covering her than I don't see a problem.
