2nd Trimester

what color would you paint...

I'm trying to pick a paint color for mine and DH's bedroom. We have dark furniture, our duvet is Silver/Gray, and all of our photos and wall hangings are black.

I really want the room to be relaxing and calming, but NOT BLUE.

I was thinking a smokey yellow, or maybe a mint green. I suggested lilac but DH wasn't to keen on the idea (he didn't like my nursery colors either until he saw them on the wall though)

So I'm all over the place. I LOVE orange...but I also love just about every other color. haha

What would you do?

Re: what color would you paint...

  • Darn. I was going to suggest a dark navy blue.

Umm. I don't know. I really am not the best at these things. You know who you should ask? My MIL. ;)

  • What about a Latte color, light brownish.  Our whole house is painted this color and it goes well with everything.

  • I would definitely steer clear of orange in the bedroom. It just seems loud and screamy for a relaxing place to sleep.

I love the lilac idea. The smoky yellow could go nicely, but careful it doesn't look mustardy. that may be icky with the colors of your decor.

If it were me I'd bully DH into the purple.  Stick out tongue

  • We painted our room Behr color Frappe. It is a gray color with a hint of brown. It is so relaxing and beautiful.

ha ha ha. I think he'd actually really like the purple once he saw it, but I want to make sure that the room is going to be a relaxing place for him to...and if he hated it, I'd feel terrible.

  • I say a sage green. My office is that color now and I love it! The purple sounds nice too but I know my DH would be totally against it too. Stick with light neutral colors, they make the room more calm and make it feel larger. I sugget you go to HDepot and get some big swatches (even if its not the brand paint you want, it will just give you a general idea)... tape them to the wall. After a few days of walking past them maybe you'll have a better idea of what you want. Good Luck!

  • ^The swatch is a good idea.  I was going to suggest a light brown color, like mocha or latte or any coffee name. :p

  • Pottery Barn magazine- all of their paint colors are Benjamin Moore and they give you the numbers.  So much easier to pick a color- plus you may be able to find a room display in their magazine that is similar to yours.

  • I tend to lean towards bold colors (my bedroom is brick red) but my first thought was olive green.  Whatever color you pick I'd suggest sticking with cool colors, since your decor is black and duvet is silver/grey, warm colors might clash.

  • what about a deep teal? or plum or eggplant? red? taupe or chocolate or muddy brown? personally i loooove limey green and grey. deep slate blue/grey?

if you want contrast, go with anything warm.. reds, oranges, yellow, brown.. green borders on the warm/cool sides. if you want somethng VERY subdude, stay on the cool side.. light green, blue, purples, grey

    good luck

oh... and dont write off a color bc when you think of it, you see it in primary color.. its all about the shade and hue of a color. when you get paint chips, pick out a black one, and grey one (that looks like your bedspread) and that will help you to come pair the three. ooooor, (my favorite way) find a fabric print that you love, with grey and black and other colors, then pull your color from that.. and use the fabric for a throw pillow or something.

  • I have the same sort of decor you do and chose a sea foam green type color, and I love it!  That said, I like the lilac idea, and the smoky yellow.  Have fun!

  • We used a color in one of our rooms called Bonne Nuit from Benjamin Moore. It's a really pretty plum/eggplant purpley color...looks great on the wall and not too feminine. It's my husband's favorite paint color in the house :)
  • OuR furniture is expresso (almost black) and our bedroom walls are painted a light sage green/grey ish green color. I love it!

  • Sounds like our room. We have a gray and white paisley comforter (and light furniture currently, but we will be buying all new dark furniture after the baby comes). We painted a grayish purple color.  We put in all silver light fixtures and we bought gray/silver drapes. The room looks beautiful.

I can't figure out how to link, but if you look up Benjamin Moore Tropical Dusk, that is either the color we picked or very close to it.

  • Ours is "Sauteed Mushroom" by Olympic. Although I wouldn't rec Olympic paint, the color is rich, warm and beautiful. You could also do a mauve-ish brown which could be really romantic with dark wood furniture. I always think of rich colors for bedroom, not pastels or blues.

  • I would go with a light grey with some purple undertones. It will be soft and relaxing and easy to match if you ever change furniture.

  • My DH painted out bedroom a beautiful purple color. Kind of a lavender. Very relaxing and suprisingly not really girly. The manly greys and blacks and dark furniture work very well with the purple.

  • i would go with a latte color with a coffee color for your trim. i think it would give off a calming feel and would match the silver bedding and dark furniture but going with a lighter shade will keep it from feeling too dark.

  • What about a sea green instead of mint green for interior paint? I think it might give the room more pop than a pastel color.
