Does your toddler have toys in their bedroom?

We live in a 3 bedroom townhouse with a loft.  One bedroom is ours and one is Eli's.  The other room is an office.  We have toys in the living room and the loft.  With this new baby coming, the office will be moved to the loft, so the baby can have their own room.  This leave toys without a home.  Currently there are no toys in Eli's room.  Only books.  He has quite a bit of space in there and could easily fit toys.  I am just not sure I want toys in his room.  Does your toddler have toys in their room?  I suppose it could be a good thing if he gets up early he can occupy himself.  What are your thoughts?

  • Yes Nicholas has some toys in his room.   Most of his toys are in our living room, but he does have one or 2 shelves of toys in his room.  It's fine for when I am doing chores upstairs or taking a shower, he'll just play in his room with his toys.

  • Mine both have toys in their rooms and it isn't an issue.  I actually like it because it gives us another place to play  during  the day (especially when it is cold or rainy and we can't go outside).

  • yep!  we have toys spread throughout our house (and soon it will expand into the attic/playroom/guest room that DH is working on).  I like having toys on every floor so that he has things to play with no matter where we are.  it also helps the house to not look like a toy store...more places to stash things!  In the morning, when we are getting ready on the second floor, he plays with toys and books there (or while I'm cleaning the bathroom, doing laundry, etc).  At night, we play on the first floor...

and soon we will also be able to go to the attic to play...I like being able to switch things up!

  • Yes, albeit not near as many, but as PP said the change of environment is nice as is the ability to have a few things available during diaper changes up on wakeup, waiting for Mom before going downstairs, etc.

Maybe ask yourself what your apprehension is and find ways to manage - are you worried about the room being cluttered?  Find storage solutions that work for you or manage the number of toys in the room - maybe rotate toys.  Maybe also set aside time for cleanup (before leaving the room or at bedtime).

  • The only toys Garrison has in her new big girl room are the ones she brings in there to play with in bed.  She almost always wakes up clutching a matchbox car or a bracelet that she took to bed with her.  Nothing big really.  I really want to try to keep most of the toys out of her room. (though she has a pretty big room and it sure would be nice to get some of our living space back ; )

It's kind of funny though because she totally finds things to play with anyway instead of going to bed.  She will get up and change her underpants 5 times for example or go find socks and put them on, take them off, put them on, take them off.

  • DS has some toys in his room.  But he doesn't sleep in there.  I'm weird.  He has a big, beautiful room.  His bookcase is full of books, he has a low cubby thing by his bed with bins that hold toys he rarely plays with or that have lots of parts (like trains).  And his closet is where we stash is hockey gear and other stuff he rarely plays with (like his dolls).  My idea is that he would sleep in there, not play.  But he doesn't sleep in there -- he sleeps in our bed.

I prefer for him to do most of his playing in the living room/empty dining room.  I want him out in the open where we can see him.

  • Yes, DD has toys and books in her room.  She also has toys and books everywhere else in the house.  They're taking over!!
