transporting breast milk

So DH and I are going to the Bahamas here in Feb for 5 nights.  I just found out that our resort room does not have a fridge!  I am still bfing and have a goal to breast feed until 1 year old.  I don't want to stop because of the vacay.  So I was thinking about keeping the milk cold in a cooler in our room with ice for the 6 days.  I read online that you can carry breast milk in your carry on with ice as much as you want since it is considered a medication.  So I am not so worried abour bringing the milk home.  I just have to keep it cold!

Any other ideas anyone has?  Thanks!

Re: transporting breast milk

  • I think that it would be best if you could find a way to freeze it when you pump it.  I don't think most of it will keep for that long unfrozen.

Does the hotel have a freezer they would let you store it in during your stay?

  • I would call the resort directly and say that you need a mini-fridge for medication.  I do that when I have to travel for work and it has always worked.  Two other alternatives would be to ask if you can use the fridge at the resort (in their restaurant or something), or to find a store of some sort once you arrive and buy a mini-fridge.  I don't think a cooler will work for 6 days - it won't keep the milk at a good constant temp.

  • I just called the resort and they are bringing in a fridge for us!  I didn't even think to call and request a fridge.  Thanks all for you opinions!  I am so happy now!

  • We got a fridge in Vegas and I recommend you set it on the coldest setting.  Our fridge actually froze most of the  milk, then we on the day we left we filled the storage bags with ice and put it all in a large lunch cooler.

  • Another thing is those coolers that can be plugged in to either a car lighter or outlet. They work VERY well! You dont have to add any ice, and are basically a small portable fridge
  • As one PP mentioned, I don't think that milk will keep that long in the refrigerator.  I only leave milk in the fridge for 4 days max.  I think I found that on Kellymom.  Is there a way to freeze it?

ETA: If you freeze it in larger quantities, it will stay frozen better/longer.  I would shoot for 6 oz in a bag.
