Re: FFFC clicky poll #2 car seats

  • We have a friend that lives a few houses down from us (as in can see their house from ours). Occasionally we have stopped by their house on our way home and when we leave again to go home she would just sit in my lap.

  • I have!  We were stuck in traffic in detroit because we were unfortunately leaving a restaurant at the same time a ball game ended.  She was only a few weeks old and screaming her head off.  We were moving like slugs and it took us 45 minutes to get out of traffic.  I nursed her while we creeped along.  Had my husband pull over once we finally got out of traffic so I could settle her back in.

  • Mine was also a one-time, stuck in traffic semi-emergency. We had already been traveling for 5 hours and there were miles of traffic jam in front and behind us moving at about 5mph. DD had pooped and spit up all over herself (just the spit up, not the poop, thankfully), and it was clear that it would be at least another hour before we got to a place where we could even pull over. We were in a construction zone, so there was no shoulder. I finally got her out of her seat, changed her diaper and clothes, and put her back in. Even in traffic jams I would usually tell people that they could still be rear-ended, but like I said, there was miles of traffic behind us, also all going at 5mph, so I decided to risk it. It ended up taking us another 2 hours to get out of the traffic jam, but thankfully it was no problem to feed DD since we FF.

  • I guess I should answer SS because when we took DD to Argentina, a lot of the cars didn't have seat belts in the back so we held her on our laps.  But otherwise, no.

  • Mine is a similar situation, traffic jam. We were in the middle of nowhere driving through Indiana and my dad was driving only doing like 10mph DS had been in the car seat without a break for about 4 hours(1 of those hours stuck in that traffic!), he was screaming to the top of his lungs, so I climbed in the back took him out and nursed him, then held him on my lap until he was a little mroe settled.
  • Does anyone else ever nurse while the baby is still in the carseat?  I have done that a lot (I wasn't driving, obviously).

Yes. I went on a four hour road trip across the state and she was not happy. I pulled out the boobala and she was happy and went to sleep. I did it on the way there and back and I was so sore from it. I was so glad I have a huge chest. I want to say it was a bit easier because I didn't have to bend over as far.

  • Wow, nursing while they're in a carseat sounds like a complete yoga workout in itself. I only ever pumped, so nursing while on the go wasn't an issue.

  • I've done it twice,  both times I felt totally guilty about it.

First time was when DS was 4 months and we were stuck in construction in stop and go traffic.  It was on a bridge so there was no where to turn off and DS decided that was the time he would poop his pants.  He was screaming, I was driving and DH was with me. After about 15 minutes DH jumped in the back and changed his diaper. He just unbuckled DS and changed him while he was still sitting in his car seat.  DS didn't calm down completely but at least he wasn't sitting in poop anymore so he was a little happier.

The second time was last month.  We went to a drive through Christmas lights display.  Basically you drive around really slow in a loop around a park and look at the Christmas lights.  DS was asleep in the car. About two minutes after we entered the park and paid admission, he woke up and started crying.  I tried sitting beside him, that just made him more mad.  I tried nursing him in his seat but that didn't work, just more screaming.  So I took him out and put him on my lap for a few minutes to calm him down and then put him back in his seat.  If we had been on an actual road I would have never done that.

I have a few times. It works amazing for road trips.

I tried once several months back with no success. I couldn't get in enough to reach him due to the side of the carseat hitting my sternum. I guess this means I have really tiny breasts? :(
  • We went to NYC over Christmas and rode in a taxi. DD rode in my lap. I was nervous, but she loved it!
