Tylenol or No Tylenol?? 4 month shots today

I have heard a lot on the news lately about avoidiing tylenol in children as much as possible. My little girl has her 4 months shots today. Last time she ran a low grade fever in the morning for two days, and I gave her tylenol and she did great. Is it better to let the fever go to establish immunity to vaccines??

What have you ladies been doing?

Re: Tylenol or No Tylenol?? 4 month shots today

  • I went ahead and gave it to DD when she spiked a 102.5 fever two days after she got her shots.  I was told not to give it preemptively, but just give it if she had a fever.  Her fever was accompanied by screaming so I would have done anything possible to get it down.

That said, if there isn't much discomfort, I tend to try and let it run its course (101 or below) since I know it is related to shots and not illness.

  • I would wait and see.  2 month shots were a breeze, but 4 month shots were a nightmare about 4 hrs afterwards.  No fever, but her thighs were so sore that she was screaming from the pain.  So I gave tylenol for 18 hrs.

  • I give her the Tylenol

  • We don't give Tylenol unless absolutely needed for shots. I would wait and see. Also, Tylenol lessens the effectiveness of the vaccine so it's always good to hold off IMO. My DD only got Tylenol once with shots and my DS hasn't had Tylenol with shots yet.
  • After the 3 month mark, I would consider it safe to give Tylenol when needed.  After his 2 month shots, LO developed a fever.  I erred on the side of caution and instead of giving Tylenol headed to the hospital.  Turns out he had a UTI and no amount of Tylenol they gave in the hospital brought the fever down.  When they are under that three month mark I would give it but at four months I would.  That being said, I have never given Tylenol to any of my children after vaccinations and they have never developed fevers.  A fever is usually an indication that something is wrong so masking it with medication isn't always for the best but every baby is different.  I don't think it would hurt at this point.

  • My daughter just had her 4 months vaccines last night.

I space mine out though...I don't like the fact of giving 3 at once so doctor gave one last night. I will go back in 10 days for the other 2.

I did this for her 2 months vaccines as well.

She had no issues with the 2 month vaccines; so I assumed that she wouldn't with these either.

Doctor said that actually its more likely that she would get a fever from the second round. And to be on the safe side give her a does of Tylenol (or whatever store brand acetimoniphin sorry i know i spelled wrong)

When we got home last night I thought she was a bit warm very slightly...so I gave her one dose to be on safe side - before it got or if it would have gotten worse.

    she was fine this morning.

  • My doctor asked me to wait to see if he spiked a fever before giving Tylenol.  He wants to know how DS reacts to the shots and if we give Tylenol in advance we wouldn't really know if he would have gotten a fever or not.  It makes sense to me.
