FTM question about let down

Hey ladies I plan on being a ebf for at least the first 6 mo. I was curious about let down. Some women say its so painful in the beginning, but is that because you arent latched properly? I had my bf class last night and have done a ton of research online so i think i have a pretty good handle on how to get baby to latch properly ( i guess we will see when he gets here).

But if you could describe what let down feels like, what did if feel like in the beginning to you (with proper latch)?

Re: FTM question about let down

  • I know this doesn't answer your question, but I don't feel mine at all...never have.  Some women don't feel one at all.  I don't feel any of it...I guess I'm lucky in that aspect!  But, I have heard some women describe it as a tingling like when your foot falls asleep...I've also heard some describe it as glass stabbing their nipples.

I think there's a wide range of answers you'll get on this one...from not feeling anything, to being a weird sensation, to being painful.

  • The only time I feel let-down is when I'm pumping.  Even then, it's not painful; it's more like relief of pressure in my boobs/nipples.

Of all the things to read up on/get concerned about in advance, IMO the feeling of let-down would be the last thing on my list. Wink

  • I feel let-down in my back-it is like pins and needles in my shoulder blades.

  • Sometimes I feel a tingling sensation, sometimes it feels really warm, and sometimes nothing at all. I think it can hurt in the beginning but that doesn't last long!

  • Mine felt good - this is going to sound really weird, but it was almost like foreplay, that kind of feeling.  Now I don't notice it.

  • I didn't start feeling the "let down" sensation until after DD's first week of steady BFing. I get the sensation both when DD nurses and without DD nursing. The sensation feels like pressure building up, then like several tiny razorblades are traveling quickly thru my milk ducts; then its quickly gone. (yes, it is temporarily painful) The side DD is nursing on gets a burst/gush of milk, and the other side milk comes out wetting my nursing bra. I would say the let down sensation lasts less than 30 seconds.

  • I barely felt it with my first.  I get it all.the.time with C.  It feels like pins and needles, doesn't last long, and doesn't really hurt - but it's strong enough of a sensation to bring you back to reality.
