Sick of people asking/bringing up induction

I'm a week overdue today.  For the past week (and a half) people of course have asked, no baby yet?  Nope, no baby.  And then the follow up question is "when will they induce?"  or "will they induce you?"

Well my dr will induce after 6 days overdue, so technically I think he would induce me now.  But I am only a week overdue.  I don't think that's like, a ridiculous time to be overdue.  I was late, my sister was late, everyone in my family was late.  We are having testing done tomorrow to check and see if everything is healthy, and if it all looks good I'd like to hold off for one more week to see if baby comes on its own and then schedule an induction at 42 weeks.  Am I crazy?  That's the overall feeling I get when I explain this to people, that I'm crazy.  I mean, if the dr says for any reason at all that inducing will be better for the baby, by all means, I'm not completely opposed.  But people, quit asking me about it.  Not everyone has their baby early or on their due date!

  • I don't think you're crazy at all! I think there are a lot of OBs that tend not to let patients go past 41 weeks, so a lot of people think that is the standard and don't realize that for some women/babies, it's okay to go to 42 weeks, and I think there is a lot of scheduled inductions done before the 40 week mark anyway so collectively there is really poor education about how long typical pregnancies run!

  • i know exactly how you feel and i'm not even OVERDUE yet.  I'm technically "due" Saturday.  I think.  But people don't know or remember and just wonder why I haven't had my baby yet.  I have people asking when I'm going to be induced too.  SERIOUSLY people.  I do not want to be induced at all.  I am going to ask my midwives tomorrow what their policy is on induction but I think they are ok w/42 weeks or a little more.  Obviously I hope I don't get to that point, but 40 weeks gestation is an approximate timeline.  Again, people just don't get it.

Good luck OP and hope you don't have to be induced!

  • Tell them that Havard did a study in the 90's that the AVERAGE (which means some also go longer) FTM without medical intervention gives birth around 41 weeks and 1 day and that the original 40 week gestational period was suggested by an OB in the 1850s.  Not only will it make you look smart/educated, but they probably can't argue with Harvard.  Tell them your baby is fine and just wants a little longer to cook.  Good luck dealing with people up your business!

  • I don't think you're crazy at all! I definitely won't be forcing this LO to evacuate immediately at 40 weeks, so a week or two extra doesn't seem insane to wait.

  • That is my plan.  My midwife doesn't even talk inducing until 42 weeks....I still have a FULL 2 WEEKS and people have already started asking me "what's the hold up" or "this is your 2nd baby they always come earlier" ....just nod and smile.  There's not much else you can do unless you get physical Stick out tongue It's seriously annoying though.  But I don't think you are crazy at all for waiting! Baby will come when baby is ready!

  • Thanks for the replies!  I knew there had to be some people out there that agreed with me, because in real life, honestly my mom is the only one that I can get to agree with me at this point.  Even DH has mentioned well maybe we should induce this weekend?  But he will go along with whatever I say so I'm not too worried about him ;)

Guess I'll have to just smile and give them the Harvard statistics :)

  • I'm right there with you.  I'll be 41 weeks tomorrow.  As of my appointment Tuesday I wasn't dilated at all.  The latest my OB will let me go is 42 weeks and I think I've accepted waiting yet another week.  I'm getting lots of text messages about inducing and its driving me nuts.  I've actually started telling people too much information so they realize they shouldn't ask again - once they hear me say I'm not dilated and inducing too early increases my chances of a c-section, they shut up or stop the text messages.

As I saw someone else post recently, as much as I want this baby to get here, I really want the water breaking at, contractions at home, rush to the hospital experience and not a scheduled time to be there to maybe get labor started.  Seems to take some of the excitement out of things although I realize its small potatoes in the end.

I'm going to go crazy thinking of things to do though to keep my mind occupied while we wait this out!!!  Doesn't help matters that my mom flew in from across the country Tuesday and is scheduled to leave Monday which means she may very well be gone before the baby arrives.  I've come to terms with it and will not induce just because she has to fly back home.  I want my body and the baby to be ready and not induced unless its absolutely necessary.

  • Not crazy at all.

My due date isn't until tomorrow but I already have people asking when my induction will be. Unless there are complications or issues, my OB won't induce until 41.5 weeks.

It's crazy how people are so stuck on the idea of 40 weeks and that due date being set in stone. It's like no one realizes that it's called an estimated due date for a reason.

  • I am right there with you.  SO maybe people including some Dr.'s don't trust a woman's body to know what it's doing.  My baby will come out when she is ready and I am not going to force her out sooner for selfish reasons! If there was any medical reason to induce than sure, but nope she is happy and healthy in there!  I was 42 weeks 3 days with my son and when he came out they said his placenta and fluid levels could have kept him happy for another month lol. People are soooo annoying at this stage, but soon it will be are you bf or ff, is he sleeping through the night, etc.  There are always annoying baby questions to answer!
