what brand of toothpaste?

I'm trying to transition DD from the toddler/baby toothpaste to a flouride one, but she keeps rejecting them and saying they are "too spicy".  They do all have a pretty strong flavor.  What do you use for you preschooler?  Do you think its bad if she keeps using the toddler/baby toothpaste w/o flouride?

  • I buy the Oral-B stages in one of the "older" stages, I can't remember what the ages are. Maybe 5-7? It has flouride, but still comes in the kiddie flavors so DS is fine with it. And he likes the fact that he gets to spit it out.

He definitely would not go for any of the regular adult toothpastes. We accidentally forgot to take his toothpaste when we went away for a few days and he totally freaked when I tried to have him use ours.

  • I work at a pedo dentist, and we always tell parents of LOs that as long as your local water has fluoride in it (most cities do), and that your LO drinks tap water, that there is no need for toothpaste period. It's the motion of the brush removing the plaque that prevents cavities and freshens the breath. More important than toothpaste is flossing... most kids get decay between the teeth where the brush can't reach! If it's all about the flavor for your LO, just get a bubble gum/fruity kids paste so tey have the flavor, and don't worry about the fluoride.

  • I found Colgate ones for kids in fruit flavors that taste like, kid you not, Jolly Ranchers.  DS likes the watermelon one and DD likes the strawberry one.  Try the strawberry -- DD is pretty picky and that was one she really dug.

  • There's a lot of children's toothpastes with fluoride and not the harshness.  However, they have a lot of additives I'm not crazy about so we use Tom's children's toothpaste.
  • AquaFresh kids, and Oral B kids both are a mild "bubble gum" flavor. I've used them both. hehe. The Oral B doesn't really foam though (Aquafresh does).

  • My DD#1 was getting a lot of canker sores so we switched to an SLS free paste with fluoride.  It's kiss my face brand.  It's pricey, but worth it to stop the constant canker sores.  It's pretty fruity smelling.
