Baby Showers

Baby shower hosting question

Hey all,

I am hosting my BF's baby shower and I have a question: how much input should I get from BF? My instinct is to ask her for her opinion on shower stuff (invitations, activities, food, etc.) because I want to please her most of all, but on the other hand, I definitely don't want to burden her when she has more important things on her mind.

I am brand new to the baby shower planning thing, so I am a little out of my depth here! Please help!

Thanks!

Re: Baby shower hosting question

  • It really depends and you need to go on your friend's personality.  For me, I wanted to be surprised and didn't want people asking me questions about all the small details.  However, I know other moms would want ot be very involved.  So it all depends on her personality.

  • I wouldn't ask her for anything except the guest list (provided you told her how many you are willing to host for), maybe a list of food she isn't eating so you are sure to have options for her, and if you're having cake - her favorite flavor!

  • When I did my friend's baby shower I asked her for a guest list and if there was any specific food she wanted.  I also asked if she did or did not want to play games, the rest I figured out on my own.  So nice of you to think so much of your friend though and throw her a shower! :)

  • For the showers I've hosted, or co-hosted, the most I got from the MTB or bride was a guest list.  We definitely kept their likes and dislikes in mind when doing the food, cake, colors, etc., but for the most part, everything else was a surprise.

ETA: Oh, and dates were discussed, unless the shower was an actual surprise.

  • it depends on your friends personality - for me personally - i would love to know every detail if possible - but im a super organized planner type.

  • My friends asked me how much input I wanted to have and I really appreciated it. I am a total over-planner, so I actually opted to keep myself out of the details and just gave them a guest list. I didn't want my friends feeling like I was taking over, but that was my personal preference. I'm sure your friend will appreciate being asked.
  • I agree with PPs regarding asking how much input she'd like to give, but I think things you really need to ask (unless she's totally a go-with-the-flow person):

    1. what foods she prefers or isn't eating (deli meats are often out)

    2. preferred or disliked colors (I planned two showers recently for people who don't like pastels, so we used color schemes that went with their nurseries)

    3. Games or no?  Some people don't like games. (also, a popular game right now is measuring mom's belly with string or toilet paper; consider her personality before doing that one)

    4. Guest list, naturally
