...would you be willing to give us some of your sperm to help us make a baby?
Our prospective known donor and his wife are coming over for dinner tonight and we're going to pop the question. I'm nervous and also not nervous. Not nervous because this is our first pursuit of any donor option, so we still have a lot of options available. Nervous, because frankly, it's a slightly tricky thing to ask of a person.
C and I talked this morning about how to approach it, and that we'll take a lot of our cues from them. This is a first conversation, not a negotiation of a final arrangement, so we're going to err on the side of fewer details. We printed out a copy of the Known Donor Health Questionnaire to give them to take with them. Basically we feel like a good approach is to say "if you wouldn't feel comfortable filling this out or divulging this stuff, it's probably not going to work." The Brill book talks about people finding out things about their known donors they never really wanted to know. I don't expect that, but we're treading carefully.
Anyway, just needed to offload all those thoughts. I am so excited at the prospect of him saying yes, and tempering my excitement with a healthy dose of reality that this is asking a lot.
The answer, by the way, is a french apple cake from Dorie Greenspan's Around my French Table.

Well, proabably the dessert won't make or break this discussion. "Well, if she would have made chocolate cake instead of angel food cake..." LOL.
Go with whatever your speciality is/what goes well with the meal and enjoy. Mmm...dessert.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
hlke I'm wishing you and C the best of luck tonight. Let us know how it goes!!!

I love that apple cake -- the one with the rum in it, right? It's one of my favorites. A good choice!

Cautiously optimistic.
Good Luck!! I love the french apple cake idea.
Asking our KD was one of the most ummm - weird things I've done in a while. It was like a throw back to 8th grade dances/crushes. But it all ended well. I agree the type of person who works out in the end is able to converse (and even laugh) about the sticky details.
And since announcing my pregnancy to a few friends/co-workers I've had another potential D come up to me and offer to donate baby number two. LOL
now I feel like a dirty dirty pig .. and I want ice cream ! i guess I took it somewhere else. sorry!!!!!
TAPIOCA? eeew...
