Acupuncture

Has anyone ever had acupuncture?  The thought of it makes me nervous, but I have no idea how I will make it through this pregnancy without some sort of relief from the sciatic pain.

Re: Acupuncture

  • I did it for months and loved it. It's very expensive. I would try the activator chiropractic method for your pain. It's not a manual manipulation of your body but a very precise pen type thing puts you back in alignment. It works wonders!!! If you google it you can find the website activator.com I think and find a chiro who uses the method in your area and they explain how it works much better than me :) also a lot of times insurance will cover it or some of it :) hope you find relief.

Sciatic pain is the worst, I've had it both pregnancies.  I go to the chiropractor and he uses heat pads (more like a blanket), massage, and the activator.  Lately when I feel it right away in the morning and at night, I've been breaking out my microwave heating pack too.

I have really been just trying to tough it out but it is a lot worse this time than it ever was with Charlotte, and like Goosh, I definitely notice it first thing in the morning (until I get loosened up I guess) and then more in the evening once you've been going all day. I have been using the heating pads on my back but I have been considering the chiro too. My OB recommended one of those support belts, but I haven't gotten one yet. One OB at the practice also showed me a couple stretches, which seemed to help for a little while but only about 20 mins or so - maybe if I keep doing them? It was just laying your legs out in front of you and stretching for your toes to help your back, and then kind of crossing one over the other and turning the opposite way. (I am not describing this very well at all).

Oh yay I love that someone else knows what the activator method is! I LOVE it :) It feels more holistic and natural to me and I get such amazing results. He has a lot of fun toys too when my neck is giving me issues or other aliments. He is my favorite appointment of the week because I am totally going weekly right now :)

  • Emilie - I had posted on your FB, then deleted, because I didnt know if you had "outed" your pregnancy on FB...

Anyways, I also had bad sciatic pain while pregnant. I saw a chiropractor (in Cicero), she came recommended by the OBs office... she was awesome. She also used the activator, and never tried to crack the neck. Her name is Dr. Moran (Advantage Chirotpractic)

I also had good relief/stretching taking the Sat. AM prenatal yoga class in Lpool at CNY Yoga Center. $13 a week - well spent.

There is another chiropractor that claims to specialize in pregnant ladies (Jessica Sielwa, I think?) I never used her, but did see her website if its something you want to pursue.

Good luck and page me if you need any more info on my chiro or the yoga class!

  • Thanks ladies!  I have a chiropractor I really like, and I usually get relief the day of the appointment, but then get right back to the pain.  But I actually ran into someone who teaches prenatal yoga (in DeWitt for local people) for $12/session drop in or $100/10 sessions, which I think is really reasonable.  I'm also going to ask the OB about PT.

I think I am more desperate for relief this week because my DH is out of the country, so all of T's care is on me, and she is really active, doesn't nap daily, and is just too heavy for me to carry on a regular basis, which makes any errands really difficult.

Sorry for the pity party.  I know I just need to suck it up, but thanks for listening to me complain about it!

  • If your OB prescribes PT - I strongly suggest you check out Championship PT in  E.Syr (Bridge St - Strength in Motion building) - Its run by Brad Pike, who is the head trainer for all of the sports teams at SU. When I went after my sicatic pain wouldnt go away after I had O, I worked with Sarah there, and she was amazing!

Seriously, after a crazy day of running around or a needy day where I'm carrying Jules a lot, my sciatic pain is so freaking bad, so I know exactly where you're coming from.
