XP: flat heads

We just had our 4 month dr appointment, and the dr we saw is a total alarmist.  This is the dr that recommended we start Zantac and Maalox when she thought he had reflux...turned out he was just constipated and prune juice fixed the issues!  Anyway, she right away notices the flat spot on LO's head and mentions a helmet.  I asked if he needs one now and then she said we can wait and monitor it...he has up to 12 months to have it round out.

My question is, would you wait it out (6 month appt) to see if it rounds out on his own?  We were told to be 'aggressive' with tummy time.  Do you think this will help?  If you have experience with this issue, what is your plan of action?

  • How flat is his head? If its really flat I think I would still just do a lot of tummy time...it can't be that bad this early!

It's flat...but have seen flatter!  I am home with him most of the time (work part time) and my Sister watches him otherwise.  we're going to really be aggressive with the tummy time and see how it goes...

  • blake has a flat spot and yes i'm being aggressive with the keeping him upright or on his tummy when he's awake.  We are reevaluating at 6 months.

  • Could you see another doctor next time and see what they think?

Our doctor said LO's head was slightly flat, but she wasn't too worried b/c she said all back sleepers have this to a degree. She said it was okay b/c it wasn't too extreme and b/c it was symmetrical. Still trying to get better about the tummy time.

DD has a flat spot and although we've been aggressive with repositioning and tummy time all along, it has not resolved and she was fitted for a helmet this past Monday. Although it seems only cosmetic, mote and more research is showing a correlation between flat spots and learning delays, among other issues. If you have questions or what to chat, please don't hesitate to page me.
