Not to bring up any yankee drama, but for some reason I still remember a post where she said she thought way more bumpies received aid than we thought, but were just afraid to admit it.
Of course, aren't bumpies better off than average by that random statistics page someone linked forever ago?
[Poll]

Re: "welfare" clicky poll
I'm inclined to say yes, even though it isn't income based.
Different subject, but I see you are from meyersdale...you are probably the closest bumpie i have seen on here. I live about 40 min north of johnstown! I never see anyone on here from my area!
so far, yanks was dead wrong.
Also so far, people must be hoping for a skittles argument. Way more views than votes. :P

That's crazy. I saw a Nestie from Frostburg. I was shocked!
We got WIC as well. That program is amazing. I'll forever remain a huge fan.
I'm too tired to argue about Skittles, but I am curious as to whether poor people can have Swedish Fish? Cuz those are delish.
Maybe add a SS...
Although our income was so low at one point we could've and probably should've taken aide to keep above water... We didn't. But we're really blessed to have the family we have (my dad pretty much took care of us for 2 months which was enough to get ahead) ...Clearly we weren't "that bad" if 2 months helped..but a lot changed when your husband actually gets hired at a job.
During that time LO was born. My hubs and I paid for crappy health coverage at a fairly high price. But I applied and was accepeted for LO to be on the states health insurance program. LO did have state medi-caide, or whatever it's called for a few months. From about 2 weeks old (right after DH's cobra ran out) and actually when I tried to cancel it within the year, they said I couldn't. Had to keep it for a full year. So I didn't renew it.
But YES, overall my family was on "assistance" for a period of time. Never got food stamps or any other help. JUST wanted LO to be covered with the best coverage possible and we couldn't afford it at the time.
yes to Swedish fish. No to booze and cigs?
that doesn't seem like SS, that seems like a yes. Only past tense, which I meant to include.
meaning you're on the cusp of qualifying?
eta...just cause
And leave your Louis Vuitton in the car.
I qualify for WIC but don't use it. The only things they provide that we actually use is a few gallons of milk and $6 worth of fruits/vegetables per month! Not worth the hassle of going to the health department for me.
ETA: It was awesome when DD was an infant. Formula is expensive so that was a big help. After she turned 1 though, not as much.
DD was on Medicaid for a year but then I got a $0.33 per hour raise so we didn't qualify anymore. It sucks having to pay medical bills for her out of pocket again.
We also recieved WIC for a short time when DS was a baby and stopped for the same reason.
Definitely. Lo didn't get Access until the retroactive period was too far away from her Children's Hospital stay. It's been very difficult to pay those bills. We've been struggling quite a bit actually. It's not just that one bill for the hospital, but for the doctors there, and the million doctors visits before she went into the hospital, and the previous hospital stay at another hospital and all the labs and scans. It sucks!
/sigh.
I thought medicaid could help with outstanding bills like that?
How do you apply for it? Do you go through you local welfare office?
We were denied pretty much everything when we applied SSI and WIC because of income. The only reason we could get health insurance (through welfare) is because she was considered to have a disability, and it took tons and tons of paperwork and forms before they would consider it.
Sometimes I wish we did. Our private insurance sucks, we pay around $6,000 a year plus another $5,000 deductible, and all visits besides well baby ones are OOP. It blows. We could almost have a second mortgage with what we pay each month.
My DH has been looking for a job with benefits, but hasn't had any luck.
Your question was Do you/your family get assistance... No we don't. We DID for a very short time.
ETA: just saw edited poll.. already clicked yes, one.
I clicked yes
the only welfare we've was all in the past ..... pell grants/fed student loans for me, UEI for me, SSI when i had dd and CA's PFL when i had dd.
no wic, no tanf, no medi-cal, no food stamps
We went through our local county office. In order to get his medicaid we are required to use EDCD waiver services. EDCD stands for Elderly and Disabled Consumer Directed waiver. DS is covered under the disability requirements pertaining to this waiver. As long as we keep up with the services we are required to then we get to keep his medicaid. I am not sure which states have EDCD waivers, it wouldn't hurt to look into it though.
Joy gets medicaid.
When we got KU, DH had a job with excellent benefits. He decided to go back to school and had to find a new job since we moved and his new job wants to charge him half of his income for health insurance for her.
DD was on Badger Care, which is the children's state health insurance, for 3 months b/c DH never put her on his insurance policy. He thought she automatically was on the plan b/c I was covered during pregnancy. THANK GOODNESS for state health care b/c she was hospitalized once for severe colic issues.
Yeah, I ripped him a new a$$hole for that one.
I searched the PA Department of Health website, and I couldn't find this. I know what Lo has is actually called a "loop hole" application status. She didn't qualify for any regular benefits, just medical through the loop hole. And they do pay retroactively, but until they processed everything and got all the papers from the docs at Children's, it was too long from the hospitalization to pay. We'll be paying on it for years.
Us too. And DS was on Medicaid for his first year while my hubs was only working seasonally. It was a HUGE help at the time. I'd never take it for granted.
I think even on a clicky poll, people aren't always honest. I don't know that that's the case here one way or the other.
Likewise, there is lots of justification going on in these posts, "well, yes but only because....." I wonder if that influences how people vote.
Oh, I think you're absolutely right about that.
I work at a non-profit offering services to low-income people and I still have trouble admitting we've received assistance. I feel like it needs justification. I guess the "boot straps" mentality goes deep.
I voted no, but maybe I should have voted that we used to be.
DH collected unemployement for several months a year at his old job (it was seasonal). It was, however, something we remedied before I got KU.
Yep and that's my issue with people when they talk about wanting to cut funding for these programs. Sure there are people who live and die on these programs but many times they are just a helping hand for people for a few months that means the difference of feeding your kid/getting heath care/housing etc for a bit or living on the streets. The reality is most of us know someone who has been on one or more of these programs at some point and were thankful for them. It goes back to that agrument we were having yesterday about voting for the greater good vs. just your current interests. It's all good to cut programs when you are doing fine but when you need them you are there asking for help just like everybody else.
One of the main reasons things haven't been as bad as the Great Depression this time around is that we do have so many social safety nets now that weren't around then, neat things like Unemployment Insurance, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, HUD, Disablity Insurance, WIC, Food Stamps, that came out as a result of seeing families ripped apart, people dying alone, living in shanty towns, starving etc during the Depression.
We get NJFamilyCare. It's for low income families with children under 18. I'm very grateful to be able to go to the doctor for DD if need be.
When I lost our health insurance after getting laid off in 09 I took her to the dr for a sick appointment. It was her regular ped & a saturday. I told the girl behind the counter that our insurance was longer in effect & could I work out a payment arrangement. She said, no because no one in billing was in the office that day. I started crying & put DD's coat back on. Told her we had to go. The girl felt horrible & told me to wait she'd go see the doctor about it. Came back & said the doctor will see DD & he won't take any money for the visit. When we got into see him he said she can come to them for sick visits for free until we get insurance & to take her to the local clinics for well visits & vaccinations. I was grateful to the dr for his kindness because I didn't have the $189. for the visit that day. He gave me some samples for her upper respiratory infection & a script for antibiotics.
She had to be w/out insurance for 3 months to qualify for NJFC and I'm grateful the dr was compassionate about our situation. We still do not have health insurance as I'm still on UEI & going back to school for my degree. DH works for the family business & his mom is working on getting us coverage but is finding it hard to get an affordable plan for all of us since it's only a 3 person business.
Anyway thats our story.
