Re: Glucose Testing - Did you eat before you went?

  • I had a slice of whole-wheat toast with JIF Natural peanut butter and passed.

  • I went this morning - I was told to fast before taking the 1hr so no food for me.  I also took the 1 hr back at 14 or so weeks (diabetes is in the fam) and was told not to eat then either...

  • I had an egg and some cheese and passed with an 81. (130-140 is failing, depending on where you go.)

ETA - Just avoid eating anything with a lot of sugar or carbs, and you should be fine.

  • I was told that I didn't have to fast. I had eggs and cheese for breakfast about an hour before. I passed the 1 hour with flying colors.

It varies from office to office though. Call your doctor and ask them what their requirements are. If you have to fast, then take the test in the morning.

  • I had bacon, eggs, and toast with jelly the morning of. My sheet said not to eat suger, chew gum, etc. 6 hrs before I took the drink. Then I couldnt drink anything even water 1 hr before consuming the drink. It was a lot to do and not to do but I passed even though I had that jelly early that morning. I think if you follow the instructions just fine you should be ok.

  • I haven't done it with this pregnancy yet, but with DS I ate the morning of the test and my results were actually lower than the normal range.  It's something you either have or you don't, what you eat really shouldn't affect the test that much.  I wouldn't eat anything right before it that could cause a big spike in blood sugar but other than that, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I had a two-hour test and was told to fast for 10-12 hours.  Only a small amount of water, black coffee or tea was allowed.  I took the test first thing in the morning and passed.
  • I had an egg and cheese sandwich last time, passed no problem. This time it's a 2 hour so I have to fast, boo.

  • i went in the mornign and had bacon and eggs (scrambled w cheese) and passed np. avoid the carbs. protein is fine
  • My midwife told me that you can eat how you regularly do. I had breakfast before I went in.

  • Mine was at an awkward time, 10:15AM. Was told to drink the Glucola 20 min before, and NOT eat 3 hours before. Well, I was not getting up at 7AM on a day off (holidays), so last time I had eaten was about 8PM the night before.

I felt fine, and passed with no issue.

  • I had coffee, eggs, ham, cheese and whole wheat toast for breakfast around 6:30am, and then had the 1 hour test at about 10 am.  But my midwives have you eat a banana and drink fruit juice for the test rather than the glucose drink.

I scored around 80, no problems.

  • I had such a busy day the day I went. The only time I had to eat was right before I went in and I knew if I didn't eat, the sugary drink would make me sick. So I ate a sandwich right before going in. I passed.

This is a really great point. The scales of pass/fail vary for fasting/non-fasting.

  • I ate breakfast about 1.5hrs before. I had a breakfast sandwich (2 scrambled eggs w/ slice of turkey & cheese on whole wheat bread) and my numbers where great. I think they said the results came back at 83. They advised me to have a high protein/low sugar breakfast before the test.

  • I did mine at 10:30 in the morning.  I ate breakfast around 7:30 ish and I ate eggs with whole wheat toast and I passed.  My midwife told me just to watch what I ate the day before (no cakes, candies, cookies, etc.) and then have a protein breakfast in the morning, ie. no sugary cereals, yogurt, fruit, honey, coffee or tea with no sugar.

  • I was so hungry I was shaking, so I ate some tuna salad, green beans, and cheese. It held me over and since it wasn't carb/sugar heavy, it didn't cause any problems.

  • Eggs and toast. Doula told me not to eat anything sugary. She also suggested that I walk around as much as possible, and if that is not an option, to go to the bathroom frequently and squat. No joke. It burns a bunch of points. I passed.

  • I had a foot long tuna sub (swiss, lettuce, tuna, mustard, whole wheat bread) and a bag of chips from Subway in the parking lot 10 minutes before my appointment and I passed.
  • It totally does matter what you eat beforehand. I was told to just "eat normally" on the day of the test (did not have to fast). I ate a normal breakfast (egg, toast, decaf coffee), then lunch (homemade hamburger on wheat bread) but had some chocolate (stupid, i know) afterwards...went in for the test about an hour after eating and failed. Had to do the 3 hour fasting and passed with flying colors.  I wish i had gone first thing in the morning the first time around...

This was my experience, too -- I was told to "eat normally" by my doctor, so I had a regular lunch (mac'n'cheese w/ ground beef) about 1.5-2hrs before the 1hr test... and the lab staff was very skeptical of my ability to pass since I wasn't fasting for it.

And, lo and behold, I failed the 1hr test. By one point. And so I had to go in for the 3hr test, which I passed by a huge margin.

    Next time, I'll fast!

  • I was specifically told to fast for 8 hours before, so I made my appt in the morning.  I passed.

  • Last pregnancy it was in the afternoon so I did eat beforehand. Failed the 1 hour.  This time it was in the morning and I fasted. Failed the 1 hour again.

Both times I then passed the 3 hour. It really doesn't matter unless you eat a bunch of donuts and chug a sugary drink immediately beforehand.

  • I had eggs with cheese about 30 minutes before. My OB specifically told me not to fast. I passed with a 74. Good luck!

  • I had a similar question too.  I'm going tomorrow for mine but not until after work at 4:30.  I was told to eat regularly throughout the day.  I'm planning to have cheerios and water for breakfast and then taking egg salad (no bread), string cheese, and celery with peanut butter for lunch.  Plus 2 water bottles throughout the day before the I have the glucose drink.

  • I had a bowl of cereal about 3 hours before the test and I failed. Did the three hour test after fasting and passed no problem. Really wished I'd fasted before the first test.

IMO, this is terrible advice. Exercise can certainly bring your blood sugar down, but the point of the test is to see how your body reacts to sugar, not how to "trick" the test so you pass. If you have GD, you certainly want to know about it.

    This!

If you have GD no matter what you eat/don't it you will fail the test.. Like PP said if you have GD you will want to know about it, so you can keep your sugars in check

  • I had a wheat bagel and cream cheese. I heard if you eat something bland, that's not high in sugar, your test shouldn't be affected. I passed mine the first time around.
  • I was told to eat normal.  She did mention eating a carb & protein meal and limit my sugar.  So i ate 2 high fiber waffles (no syrup) and a couple of turkey sausages for breakfast.

She did mention not to eat anything after i had drunk the stuff.  I passed with no issues
