NBR: moving/packing china and wine glasses-need help

we are starting to pack away some unused items to make more room in our condo for baby (and eventually we'll look to sell/move).  As i'm going to be packing breakables like china and wine glasses, what is the best way to pack them without breakage? I feel like just a few layers of bubble wrap around each thing isn't enough to ensure no breakage. And it'll get pricey to pack with tons of bubble wrap.

any tips?

Re: NBR: moving/packing china and wine glasses-need help

  • Last time I packed up my china I just used good ol' newspaper and some hard paper. I crinkled up pieces and put them all across the bottom of each box, wrapper each dish with a generous amount and put crinkled up pieces between dishes, against the sides of the boxes, etc, and made sure to fill any extra space with crinkled up newspaper so everything was held pretty snug. It's not a very efficient way to pack because you don't get a tonne in each box, but I'd rather be safe that sorry. I also made sure to mark each box on every side and the top that there was china in it and also had them in a designated area. We moved ourselves and we kept the china inside the cab of the truck and unloaded it into a safe place first thing. I'm sure there are more expensive ways to do it, but everything worked out fine for us!

  • With our wine glasses we went to liqour stores and asked for their wine boxes because they're sectioned off just enough that each little slot is big enough for a glass and we wrapped them up and stuck 'em in there. It was great.

  • I think every single wash cloth and towel that was moved was used as soft lining for in between breakable items. For all glasses, I fill with newspapers.

  • I second the newspaper and brown packing paper. Thats what we used for our glasses and such when we moved. Cheap and easy. You could still do bubble wrap on the outside if you wanted for extra protection.

  • That brownish packing paper like what U-haul has is what I've always used and had no problems...you can buy a big box of it, and it's probably cheaper than bubble wrap.
