Baby Names

Catherine - How popular?

Catherine is growing on DH and I a lot - however, we're worried that because of the Royal association, it might get really popular in the coming years.

But, we don't know any baby Catherines.  Sure, we know people in our OWN age-group called Catherine, but no babies.  Nameberry.com says it's been #190 for the last 10 years according to their stats - do you think that's likely to change?

Or do you think people will wait until Will and Cate have a baby and jump on THAT bandwagon?

  • It is Will and Kate.

I don't think Catherine is going to be any more popular. I think you are safe.

  • I've only known a few Catherine's (various spellings) in my life. Over the past ten years SSA puts Catherine anywhere from 81 (2000) to 193 (2010). Katherine seems to be more popular often in the 30's, 2010 in the 70s. Kathryn ranks much higher.

  • Catherine is a name that will work for every generation.  It's beautiful.  I don't think there will be any more Catherines born in the next few years than there already would have been (Pippas and Phillipas, yes, but not Catherines)

  • I have a Katherine (who goes by Kate).

I will be honest, I run into A LOT of "Kates"... whether they be Kate as a stand-alone name or Kate as a nickname for Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn/Caitlin...  It doesn't really bother me, but it is a consideration.  My Kate is in a small preschool and there are 15 kids between the two 2 year old classes.  There are two Kates.  It is the only name where there is a double.

I know a handful of baby C/Katherines.  I would use the social security baby name list to figure out how popular it is over nameberry.  And since Katherine and Catherine and Kathryn and Katharine are all the same name when said aloud, I would make sure to look up all of the variants before concluding how popular it is.

I love the name.  I think it is timeless and classic and flexible and gives the owner lots of options.  I have no regrets even with what I consider an influx of baby Kates.  It is a great name.

No it doesn't.  In 2010 Kathryn ranked at 230.  Katherine was at 70.  Catherine was at 193.

If you go to namenerds.com, if you combine all of the spellings of "Katherine", it ranks overall at #48.

I was going to link to the Name Nerds list also.  I don't think Catherine is going to spike because of the royal Catherine, but I think that Kate (and its derivatives) are kind of popular right now.  But I love Catherine anyway.
